Chapter 14: An Unlikely Duo
Angus purred as he chased the ball of wool Dean had thrown for him down the corridor. Despite the time, neither Matt nor Dean had made the decision to turn in for the night in their respective quarters. Instead they'd opted to stay in the courtyard, entertaining Angus. Matt glanced at the fluffy cat who eagerly chased after his prize. Maybe he was more dog than cat? The thought amused him.
"I miss Lucy," Dean sighed. "She didn't write all summer."
"She went to the medieval islands," Matt replied as Angus practically pranced towards them with the wool.
"Home," Dean nodded, nostalgia glazing his wide eyes. "Why did she go?"
"To see what information she could gather."
"Did she get a lot?"
"Enough to satisfy her curiosity."
"Oh."
Matt was giving off an unhappy vibe to Dean so he decided to stop asking questions. He bent down and stroked Angus before he continued on his travels with the wool. He didn't really know what to say to Matt, it seemed he'd taken a lot of Lucy's attention away from him and Dean wasn't sure how to feel about that. He was also nervous about the sure upcoming war, he didn't know what would happen and the thought deeply terrified him.
"Hey, I'm sorry," Matt raised his hands and then rubbed his eyes furiously, tiredness and frustration were getting the better of him most recently.
Dean turned to him curiously. "For what?"
"For acting like an asshole," he removed his hands from his eyes. "I just miss Lucy...I mean, I know I saw her all summer but she's just so distracted. She's worried, God I understand but I just wish things could be normal."
Dean nodded, he forgave Matt instantly. "It's okay, I understand."
"Yeah," Matt nodded and then laughed despite himself. "I just wish I could take her on dates and things and that she had nothing to worry about aside sneaking the bunches of flowers past her dad when she got home...or trying desperately to barter with him for a longer curfew."
"But things can't be like that."
Matt raised his head, it was unlike Dean to be so serious.
"We have to get through this. This war that Zuc is gearing up for has been centuries in the making. Ever since the fall of Vasil there was bound to be another who took his place. It was just a case of when."
"And it was Lucy," Matt murmured. "Why her?"
"Well," Dean scooped up Angus who was mewing for his affection. "Something tells me it's been written for her to be the one to kill Zuc."
"Oh?"
"Well it was Merlin and Sebastian right? Two, back in the day, powerful young men. Surely that meant that the descendants to defeat Vasil's descendant had to be as equally powerful. It just so happened that Lucy and Shona are the finest descendants since them and so they have to be the ones to do it."
"What about Snape?"
"Professor Snape," Dean corrected. "Is a powerful wizard. Although Lucy and Shona are very capable of doing this alone he's like their guide...if he's still around it's almost as if this war will be far more dangerous than the last."
"But Lucy's going to be fine, she always is. She has an answer for everything and I believe in her," the words were tumbling out of his mouth thick and fast.
