Sarah was in trouble. She was in trouble because she had been way over her head and decided to rescue her friend, Will. Rescue him from what you ask? Well, the answer to that goes back to two months ago.
I had been on my routine walk that evening.
The weather was chilly and the dark clouds looming in the distance alerted people to the coming rain. I was dressed in a thick green sweater that reached to my mid-thigh with faded blue jeans and brown sandals.
I enjoyed the cold weather much more than most people. I enjoyed taking long walks-like the one I was on now- in freezing weather rather than staying indoors with a blanket wrapped around their bodies and a mug of hot chocolate in their hands, warming up their freezing bodies.
I walked the long distance to the park; Victorian street lamps illuminated the path as I made my way through the park. The grass was green and still damp from earlier rains. I inhaled deeply; the smell of incoming rain combined with the smell of damp earth brought a smile to my lips.
Walking over to one of the benches in the park, I sat down and watched the few birds in the sky fly to their homes, seeking shelter from the oncoming rain. I was watching a small baby bird follow a larger bird when I noticed another person sitting on a bench under a lamp not too far away from me.
I had been blessed with great eyesight since birth and i could see the other person's face quite clearly. It was a man. From what I could see he had a lean build with short dark hair and lightly tanned skin, which struck me as odd considering the weather these last few weeks had been quite horrid but I found it rather lovely. He wore a dark grey hoodie topped off with a midnight blue jacket, with dark pants and a pair of faded grey boots.
I spent some time watching the man but looked away and up towards the sky when a drop of rain landed on my jean-clad thigh. My jeans turned darker and stuck to my thighs when the sky opened up and rain poured to -with amazing force- the earth. I sighed and stood up, I knew I would have to head home soon or risk my mother getting angry with me for coming back home late, soaked to the bone again.
I exited the park and began heading home, when a strange feeling told me to turn back. I turned to look at the tanned stranger and found him staring openly at me. They stared at one another for a short while before I turned away and continued walking home. I was soaked to the bone and shivering by the time I arrived to my house.
Fortunately my mother had not yet returned from work, I unlocked the front door and walked inside leaving my wet sandals by the door, I climbed upstairs and headed straight for the shower. Turning on the shower, I got in after stripping off my wet clothes.
Even though I loved the rainy season, I hated the feeling of wet clothes clinging to my skin, I rinsed off the small stones that were stuck to my feet before turning off the shower and exiting. Grabbing a towel from the towel rack, I dried my hair before wrapping it in the towel and grabbing a different one for my body and exiting the bathroom.
I went to my bedroom to change into a pair of loose black pajama pants and a grey shirt with penguins that had a heart surrounding them and words in clean, bold letters, 'TODAY IS THE DAY'.
Exiting my bedroom, I went back to the bathroom and picked up my wet clothes to put in the laundry. I left the laundry room and went to the kitchen, opening the fridge door; I searched inside for something to eat before settling for an apple and a bottle of water.
I went to the living room and sat down grabbing for TV remote before it fell off the side of the couch. I then opened my bottle of water and took a few gulps before pulling the bottle away from my lips and closing it. I took a bite out of the apple next while flipping through the channels, I then settled on a channel that was showing my favorite movie.
Halfway through the movie, my phone vibrated with an incoming message. I picked it up from my side and unlocked it. It was a message from one of my closest friends, Jasmine.
'Are you going to come over?' it read.
I thought for a moment before typing out a reply. 'I might. Is James still coming?"
My phone vibrated in my hands once more as I received another message. 'I don't know. Text me if you're not going to make it.'
'Okay.'
Jasmine was one of my closest friends; we met each other back when we were children. Jasmine was a cheerful girl; she had always been friendly with anyone she met and that never changed even when they got older and got into high school. Jasmine had met James just a few weeks back when they had been walking back from school. His real name wasn't James but I found it easier to call him James as I had always liked the name James but never met anyone named so.
I was considering heading over but my mother opened the door at that moment, her phone to her ear and one of her hands held a few bags filled with a variety of foods, in the other one a wet umbrella.
"Yes. I'll get it to you by next week Monday." Her mother said to whoever was on the other side of the phone call.
I stood up from the couch and walked to my mother; I took the bags and went to the kitchen to arrange the food in cabinets and a few in the refrigerator. I walked out of the kitchen and back to the living room and sat down picking up my phone to continue texting Jasmine.
"Sarah, it is a school night. Why are you still awake at 9:30 p.m.?" Her mother asked, shutting the door and leaving the umbrella by the door to dry off.
"Mom, it's Friday and I was heading over to Jasmine's so we could finish our homework together." I replied.
"Did her parents agree?" Sarah's mother, Julia, questioned. Bending down, she removed her black high heels and walked over to her daughter and sat down on the couch beside Sarah.
"Her mother is still traveling and so is her father. It's only her and her brother and he said it was alright if I went over." I answered, turning to face my mother.
Julia squinted her eyes at her daughter, trying to figure out if she was lying or not. "Alright, you can go but what time will you be coming back?"
My lips lifted up into a sweet smile. "I was thinking I could stay over at her place and come in the morning. Please?"
Julia sighed, she had had a feeling that Sarah would ask to stay over at Jasmine's. "Can I trust that you will only be doing homework? And that you'll be back by tomorrow morning?"
I lifted my hand in a mock salute. "I promise."
Julia sighed once more. "Do you need a ride to her house?"
I nodded my head. It was dark outside and though the walk from my house to Jasmine's wasn't that long, I wasn't foolish enough to risk it. "Yes please."
