Have you ever thought of yourself as being a burden? After countless failures in your life, that you came to the conclusion that you couldn't do anything right?
As I look at my reflection in the mirror, I try to ensure myself that everything would be alright. Believing that I wasn't about to join my brothers to solemnly attend my parents funeral.
I bit my lip hard, trying to stop myself from crying. Just the thought of my parents not being here with us made my stomach turn.
"Audrielle! We are leaving in five minutes, we cannot be late!" I heard Quinn holler from downstairs.
I sighed heavily, as I made my way downstairs to meet my brothers in the hallway. Their faces were filled with grief, as Deene ran his hand through his hair, tears streaked his face from beneath the sunglasses he was wearing.
Without saying a word, we made our way to the car to drive to our parents funeral. I could tell it was going to be a beautiful day, as the sun started to peak its way through the clouds. It was rather ironic how the sun seemed to come out on the most gloomy of days.
We got into the car and made our way to the funeral. I kept looking up at the sky, hoping that this was all a dream. I was interrupted by Andreis, who hadn't spoke since we received the tragic news of our parents three days ago.
"I don't understand why we have to move out of the house." Andreis grumbled.
"Are you seriously having this conversation right now? Driving to our damn parents funeral Andreis?" Quinn said angrily as he stopped abruptly at a stop sign.
"I just find it bloody ridiculous why we can't stay here, Tarak is old enough to raise us. Why the hell should we have to up and move our lives on the account of you?" Andreis spat, growing with fury.
"Mum and dad would have wanted me to step up and take care of you, maybe if you'd stop being a brat-" Quinn was interrupted by me sighing.
"Can we all just get along, please? It's what mum and dad would have wanted." I could feel my tears stinging, as I tried to blink them away.
I turned to Andreis. "Maybe this will be good for us, Andreis. Right now we need each other, fighting is not going to make it better." I looked at him, searching for any kind of understanding of what I just explained to him.
"I'm sorry everyone, I'm trying to stay positive." I could see the look of guilt on his face, I grabbed his hand and he smiled at me.
"We'll get through this together." Quinn said as he put the car in park.
Everyone fell silent again as we looked at the church. It was a beat up old thing, but it was the only one in Shediac.
I grabbed onto Deene's and Andreis' hand as we made it up the steps to the church.
This was our final goodbye to the parents who had raised us up to this point. I never thought my parents could die, growing up I looked at them as heroes. Once we received the news that some drunk asshole ran our parents off of the road while they were coming back from their anniversary dinner, I wanted to find the bastard that did this to our parents. He ruined our lives in a matter of seconds and only received a four year jail sentence? It was a slap in the face for my brothers and I, which is why Quinn decided to move us to Maine.
I stifled a sob as I walked in and was greeted by family members and friends, who were all crying and giving their condolences.
I walked up to the two mahogany caskets, and looked at my two amazing parents. My mother was gorgeous, her blonde curly hair was down, I loved playing with her hair as a child. My loving father, who loved and protected me from the monsters in my room when I was little.
I chuckled as I remembered he would come into my room every night with a flashlight to check under my bed and in my closet for any monsters that might have been lurking. After he would check everywhere, he would look at me with a smile and say, "See? What monster would hide in your room knowing she had a scary father, and four older brothers who'd protect you?"
I closed my eyes, tears rolling down my face as I kissed my mother's, and then my father's forehead.
"I love you with all my heart." I whispered.
