Chapter 3
Monday morning, first day of school. Everyone's worst nightmare. I was seated on the marble counter in the kitchen munching on a granola bar. I wore a yellow summer dress that stopped just above my knees with a brown jacket and ankle boots.
I was waiting for Robin to give me a ride to school but as usual, he was running late.
"And I thought women spend more time in the bathroom" Catherine said.
"Tell me about it" I replied with my mouth full. She gave me a disapproving look and I just grinned. I had gotten used to her being there. She wasn't that bad. I checked my phone for the time. It was almost 7:30 and we needed to be in school before 8:00.
I was thinking of breaking his door down with a bat when Robin strolled into the kitchen.
"Took you long enough" I muttered.
"Hey, I have to live up to girls' expectations. I can't go to school looking like a slob" he defended himself as he stole my half eaten granola bar and popped it in his mouth. Catherine giggled.
"I don't care, you're buying me breakfast at McDonald's" I said in a monotone then got off the counter. He just grinned. I went to the garage with my book bag. Robin was following closely behind.
"There's no time for that, Aria. We'll be late" he said then entered the driver's seat.
I let out a fake gasp, "You don't say!" he rolled his eyes with a smile. "I don't care. you stole my excuse for breakfast so you're buying me food!" I yelled.
"Fine... Sheesh. Crazy woman" he muttered. He backed the car out of the garage then started our drive to school.
Even though I tried to hide it, I was nervous. In my last schools, I was known as the freak. I intended to not have any label in this one. I wanted a normal senior year.
"You okay?" Robin asked me, he had his eyes on the road but he occasionally glanced at me.
"Just a bit nervous", I admitted. I laughed nervously. "It's hard being the new girl".
"Don't worry, it'll be fine. You have me, okay?" He said then smiled reassuringly.
"Thank you" I muttered.
*******
An hour later, I was in Literature class. The teacher was going on about a poem that I wasn't interested in. I wasn't even trying to pay attention to her. My attention was on the school's field. I sat at the back of the class next to a window. You could see the field clearly from there. There was a dead boy, seated in the middle just staring. He was about sixteen years old.
"Mr. Grayson, do you care to explain why you're late?" I heard the teacher ask. She was looking at Rayne at the door. He walked over to her. They talked in low voices then she nodded, turning back to the board. Some girls were trying to look appealing, batting their eyelashes and arching their backs. I rolled my eyes. His eyes scanned the room until they landed on me and his mouth tugged up in a smile. I couldn't help but smile back. He sat next to me.
"Hey, Aria." He greeted while getting his notebook out of his bag.
"You were almost thirty minutes late." I pointed out in a hushed voice.
"When has the bad boy ever come early on the first day of school?" He asked with a smirk.
I smiled, "Never. Good point."
