***************

I traced patterns on Alex’s bare chest as he held me. I loved how the moonlight illuminated his golden skin.
Alex kissed my forehead and I flashed him a satisfied smile. With Alex’s warm body against mine, I fell asleep.
***
I was awoken with a kiss, making me giggle. “Good morning,” Alex whispered against my ear. I put my arms around his neck and pulled his lips against mine again.
He kissed me deeply while his fingers traced my sides. He crouched over me and caged me in with his arms. For a second he just looked into my eyes with a strange gleam in his, then he leaned down and kissed me again.
When he moved away, I immediately missed his skin against mine. I pulled the sheets higher to cover my chest as I sat up.
“I have a meeting to attend to in a few minutes, so I have to leave.” Alex said as he pulled on a pair of jeans.
I admired his broad shoulders and sculpted chest before he pulled a grey shirt over his head. His hair looked rumpled but it made him look sexier.
“Okay, but hurry back.” I said in a husky voice.
“I most definitely will.” He gave me a quick kiss. With one last glance at me he left the room and after a few moments I heard the door open and close.
I fell back on the bed and stared at the ceiling. Happiness bubbled up inside me and my mouth stretched into a broad smile. I felt so stupid but I couldn’t stop the sigh that escaped my mouth.
As I lied there I remembered the sealed envelope in my backpack. I decided to take a shower first before I took on my next assignment.
Even as I showered and cleaned my teeth, I couldn’t wash of the feeling of Alex’s touch. With shock, I realised that I might have feelings for Alex.
I shook my head as if to clear it, which didn’t really work, but it did snap my out of my daze.
I pulled on some clothes and gathered my wet hair into a messy bun. Some water trailed down my neck making me shiver.
As I reached for the envelope a strange feeling crept into my heart. For some reason I was afraid to open it.
Laughing at my stupidity, I tore the envelope with a swift movement. When I pulled the paper out, a small flash drive fell out with it.
It took me a few moments to register the name on the paper. Alex Walker. There was a picture under the name. It was a younger version of Alex with close cropped hair and he looked so serious.
My mouth hung open as I stared at the paper in my hand, then I remembered the flash drive that fell out with the paper. It was still on the floor by my feet so I quickly picked it up. My laptop was on my desk in the living room so I rushed to it and inserted the flash drive.
There was a lot of files on it and I felt restless as they loaded. When the laptop notified me that the files were ready to be used I opened the first one. It was a newspaper article from thirty years ago about a science experiment where they tried to modify the soldiers’ DNA so they could be some kind of super-soldiers.
The next file was a video. I opened it and saw an old man in a lab coat injecting some kind of serum into a young woman’s neck. There was no sound on the video, but it felt like I could hear her scream as the liquid entered her body. She started shaking violently and foam came out of her mouth. After a few seconds she was dead.
The other files on the flash drive were all about the experiments and the test subjects died every time. Almost at the end I found another video file. This time it was a younger scientist with black unruly hair and thick glasses. He talked into the camera like it was a person. Behind him you could see a lab and there was a baby on a small cot next to him. The video was from nineteen years ago.
“Video log number seventy eight.” The man said and turned the camera towards the baby. “The experiment was successful. Behold the first modified human.”
I stared in shock. They experimented on a baby!
“The subject was born five months ago and we started the experiment three months ago. It has been tested that the subject have an abnormal brain capacity and she is able to respond to stimuli that babies her age shouldn’t be able to respond to.” The man handed the baby a pen and to my surprise she broke it in two. “She has abnormal strength and speed.” He commented in a matter-of-fact tone.
“Further testing will be required and the subject will be given two more doses of the serum to ensure that she is at maximum capacity.” With that the scientist switched of the camera.
I couldn’t bring myself to move. Experimenting on humans were just plain wrong, but I had no words for the feelings I felt after I saw the video. My eyes burned and I clicked on the next video file.
It was the same scientist as the previous video. “This is video log number eighty two.”
This time he held the baby in his arms. She has grown a bit since the last video and her eyes were different. I looked closer and swore out loud. The baby had yellow cat eyes just like my own!
“After two more doses of the serum the subject started acting violently whenever she got upset. Her eyes has changed and she is growing at and impossible rate.”
After a pause the scientist looked straight into the camera. I could see the horror in his eyes. “The subject is no longer human. We have created a monster! It might be for the best to terminate it.”
He switched the camera off.
There was only two files left on the flash drive. One was a document and the last file was a video file. I decided to read the document first.
It was a report. My mouth hung open as I read through it. Ther report was about Alex.
Alex Walker was a soldier who fought in Iraq. There was a secret mission he and three others had to carry out but things went horribly wrong and Alex and a woman named Isobel Jepson were the only ones to make it out alive. They were both taken to a facility in America where they were treated for their injuries. Alex kept telling them that it was Isobel who betrayed them but the doctors told him he had PTSD. They were both led to believe that the injections they got were for the injuries and mental disorders, but it was the same serum that were used on the baby. They were given smaller doses and they didn’t show results as fast as the baby. After two years Isobel were sent back into the field and Alex was honourably discharged.
I opened the video file before I could give myself time to think about what I’ve just read.
It was a video log just like the previous one with the same scientist. He looked a lot older and his hair had turned grey. “The subject have not slept in over a week. It has been proven that it could go for days without food or water. So far there have been no signs of any withdrawal symptoms like we have seen in subject x. Subject y seems to be stronger, both physically and mentally. My hypotheses is that the serum takes a different effect on male and female subjects”
“Subject x could not be controlled and she is slowly losing her humanity.” I realized that subject x must be Isobel. If she is so unstable, why would she be sent back into the field?
The scientist moved the camera so I could no longer see his face, but the big form of Alex in the cage. His hair has grown longer than it was on the photo and he had a beard. My heart ached at the sight of his eyes. He looked defeated and lifeless. It was strange to think of this soldier as the man I saw this morning.
There was a sound of steel against steel and Alex jumped up in an unnaturally swift movement. A guard tried to stop him and in split seconds he was ripped in to. Alex came closer to the camera and he was covered in blood. The camera went off and I wanted to see what happened next.
If Alex was a modified soldier it meant that he could be dangerous. I searched the internet, databases and even the dark web for information about Alex, but the only information I could find where from before he got injured in Iraq.
I got up and grabbed my coat and boots. Before I did anything that I would regret, I had to get out for some fresh air.
I found myself on the roof and the whole time I was up there, I couldn’t get the thought of Alex out of my head. I kept seeing him when he had a fever. I felt his too warm body coming closer to my own and then I thought about the first time he kissed me. My lips tingled at the thought.
I decided to get as much information about Alex as possible and if he really is a problem, I would take care of him. The thought of killing Alex scared me. I might really have feelings for him and I knew that I would end up hurt.
