Skeptic group are the ones who do not believe in things mystical, magical, miraculous. This group is very much of its kind and continues to grow because logically understand the story of Jesus.
Jesus' miraculous birth can not be accepted by this group. Maria may not be able to conceive it without raped by a man.
Them guessing with a variety of possibilities, that the real Maria was raped to become pregnant.
Possible both Mary and Joseph had sexual intercourse before they married to Mary became pregnant.
A third possibility Maria affair with another man until Mary became pregnant.
As for the reason Maria affair for a noble purpose. It was thought of Matthew 1: 20b, Luke 1: 35b mentioning that the baby in the womb of Mary was holy.
Although never known a noble reason, the possibility of Mary sold her virginity to earn some money.
The money may be used for a noble purpose, perhaps to feed the family, help the poor in need.
Perhaps the strongest reason to help Elizabeth. After hearing the news that Elizabeth, her kinsman, pregnant and need the money for the cost of childbirth and purposes that are not mentioned.
Maria gave up her virginity to help Elizabeth. After receiving the money, Mary immediately went to visit Elizabeth and give it some to Elizabet. Cost rent for 3 month in Elizabet house.
Luke 1: 56 (TB) And Mary stayed about three months with Elizabeth, and then return home.
It seems this is the closest possibility according skeptic group.
Three months passed, Maria enlarged abdomen, can not cover up that she was pregnant. After finding out Mary was pregnant, then her fiance Joseph intend to divorce Mary, for Matthew wrote:
Matthew 1:19 (TB) Because Joseph her husband, being a just man and not willing to make her a public example, was intended to divorce her quietly.
Joseph suspected that Mary had an affair with another man, but Maria was reluctant to speak.
Joseph could have reported Maria on charges of committing adultery, but he did not. Penalties commit adultery when it is very heavy, stoned to death.
Somehow Joseph finally be able to know that the reason Maria cheating is for a noble purpose.
A baby in the womb is not guilty, and Maria had a genuine purpose, noble reason why he was willing to get laid by a man other than her fiancé.
Since Joseph was kind, then he retains Maria as her fiancé, received the baby, then took his wife.
Matthew 1: 24-25 (TB) arose from his sleep, Joseph did as the angel of the Lord told him. He took his wife,
but did not have intercourse with her until she gave birth to a son whom he named Jesus.
