Lyira yawned and rubbed her eyes as she plopped down on the bench ready for breakfast. A group of Gryffindor's who had stayed behind for Christmas giggled and glanced over at her as she walked past. Lyira frowned, turned away and felt exposed again when her hair didn't fall down to cover her face. She sighed and slid a few pancakes on her plate and ran her fingers through her hair. She allowed a smile as she started to pour treacle all over the plate. Suddenly she stopped. Rose hated me using too much treacle, she thought quickly and put down the treacle as if it was burning her. She shook the memory from her mind and tucked into the pancakes which had started turning soggy from the pool of liquid.
The day drew on and everything reminded her more and more of her dead sister and how lonely it was without Sophia and Jack. They took her mind off it- the pain and sadness. But while they were off with their families she was left to make small talk with a few of her doom mates. (They were more of just people she would have civil conversation with rather than 'mates'.) One of the girls, who Lyira had to admit she was a little closer to, came over with a small gift wrapped in brightly coloured wrapping paper.
Lyira was shocked to say the least.
"Uh- thanks very much! You didn't have to," she smiled as she gratefully took the gift.
The girl, Martha, replied awkwardly, "Well I knew losing, um... you know, after the war not having her hear. Well it would be tough for you" She gave a pitying smile and waited for Lyira to unwrap the gift.
"She had a name you know!" Lyira snapped. "Yeah, thanks for the present" she added before walking away leaving Martha standing a little bewildered.
Lyira was left feeling permanently angry; she slumped down on one of the chairs in the common room and glanced around checking she was alone. Not many students had stayed for Christmas, and considering the shortage of students who returned back this year the numbers were even lower. She fiddled with the ribbon on the present and contemplated opening it.
Martha had been a family friend, but had been closer to Rose than she had Lyira. Once they came to Hogwarts and Martha and Lyira where both sorted into Hufflepuff the two became closer. Lyira sighed and slowly unwrapped the present, smoothing out the paper as she did. Inside was a small wooden box with scripted words engraved onto it.
For the person who completes you
Lyira frowned; she and Lyira had never been this close. She opened the box and found a small pendant, it was in the shape of a broken heart.
"A friendship necklace?" Lyira contemplated out loud, and wondered if Martha had the other half. She was just about to close the box but she spotted a small note written on pristine white card.
Dear Lyira,
I understand loosing Rose must have been extremely hard on you. I found it tough and I was just a friend. You know how close she and I were before coming here and then we became friends and stuff... Well obviously you know that, oh I'm waffling and this was meant to be a nice letter. Look what I wanted to say was that I am really sorry for your loss and I understand if you need space but I miss you.
I wanted to give you this present although I know nothing I have or can give you will make up for Rose, and no matter how close we may become I won't replace her. She also told me that she had a couple of arguments when the dark forces were growing with other class mates and stuff. She talked to me about it, confided in me and we got closer again, without you knowing. I didn't realise it was like going behind your back until now. I want to apologise and say sorry for everything that's happened, also don't hate her for it... she just wanted someone to vent to when she was angry.
