Chapter 2
The bell finally sounded out through the school, releasing everyone from the boring classes that imprisoned them. It's been two weeks since the move, but it felt like I've been in school for centuries since then. I got up and stretched my arms then walked over to Mikado and Anri who were talking to Kida. He yawned as I came over then wrapped his arm over my shoulder "I can't believe people let this kind of torture pass off as learning!" I smiled at his lame attempt at a joke, but happy either way. He grinned and took his arm back, creating grand gestures while he spoke to the three of us. "I say we hit the town tonight and grab a bite to eat! What do you say?" he schemed, rubbing his hands together excitedly. Anri agreed followed by a timid reply from Mikado so I chimed in"Alright, sounds like fun!"
We gathered our things and before we knew it we were among the crowds of countless people once again, city lights gleaming off each face. Still not knowing Anri very well I decided to try and get to know her. However, it proved to be difficult with Mikado and Kida practically chatting her up the whole time. I tagged along behind them as they chatted, chiming in here and there, but mainly off in my own world. I didn't catch them stopping at a light so I bumped into the back of Kida. He looked over his shoulder and smiled like a dork,
"You okay back there?" he asked with a slight comedic tone, and I gave him a small laugh
"Yeah, just tired."
"Who wouldn't be after all those stupid classes today, but don't worry a little food will pick you right up!"
he took my arm then dragged me inside a large building that looked like something you would see out of a Russian movie. Anri and Mikado followed us while I giggled softly at Kida, pulling me through the doors and into the restaurant. He then waved his arm dramatically, panning the sushi bar in front of us. I elbowed him lightly to get him off of me, still laughing. I began to ask Kida what was so great about this place when a tall, very tall, man with gray hair approached us from behind the counters.
"Oh hey, Simon!"
Kida greeted him
"Hello again, Mr. Masaomi! You want sushi, yes?"
Kida, Mikado, and Anri all nodded while I stood there taking in his appearance, never seeing a man this tall or someone with such an interesting eye color. He looked at me and leaned closer,
"You here for sushi too, yes?"
Being put in the spotlight by someone as tall as him my words fumbled around like an idiot, but he just smiled understandingly.
"You must be thinking what someone like me is..."
he began and figuring where he was going I interrupted him,
"N-no, of course not sir!" I stuttered.
"I was just captivated by your eyes, I've never seen anything like them."
the others looked at me like I was crazy and I knew I had made a fool of myself. But Simon just smiled, surprisingly, and patted me on the shoulder
"You are a very kind girl, who is this Kida?" "Oh, she's my best friend from back in the day, Emi."
Simon glanced over at him and then back at me
"Hmmm, you should make sure she stays close..." his face turned serious.
"You never know who might want to take advantage of her kindness."
he looked over at Kida sharing a serious expression. But eventually, Simon smiled again and patted me once more. "Nice to meet you Emi, now I serve you sushi!"
We all went back to the way we were like the moment never occurred, we ate till we couldn't any more then left. The sun had set and the city sprung to life with its captivating sounds and lights. We headed back over to the park and hung out under a tree. Each of us full of cheap but delicious sushi were now drowsy and drifting away to the sound of Kida's rambling. I had climbed up into a branch at some point to look up at the buildings scraping the stars above us, and Anri had fallen asleep on Mikado's shoulder making the two of them look like an adorable couple. I was surprised it wasn't Kida cuddling up to her and her large bust, but I was definitely not complaining. Even though I was used to him flirting with other girls, even from when we were kids it never sat right with me in my gut. But I knew there was no point in stopping him. "Getting sleepy?"
His voice rung out from behind me making me nearly tumble off the branch. I heard him laugh while I steadied myself and turned to find him hanging upside down from the branch over me. I flashed an evil grin as he continued laughing before yanking him down from the branch landing him beside me. He rubbed his head and we both laughed at each other.
"Ouch, that hurt!" he whined
"Serves you right you jerk!"
Soon we were sitting next to each other in silence staring up into the sky.
"Hey, Emi?" I heard him ask
"Yeah?"
"I'm glad we're able to hang out again. I forgot how much fun you are."
I felt my face get hotter at his words and trying my hardest not to fall off again.
"Yeah, none of my newer friends were as fun as you."
he looked over at me and smiled
"I'm glad that we've still stayed close, I mean you're one of the only people I could tell everything to."
I smiled and looked at my watch, and in horror, I stared down at the time.
"I have to go! I didn't know it was this late!" I jumped down and grabbed my bag and started to run out of the park.
"Hey, wait!"
I heard him yell bounding down from the tree as well, landing right on top of the sleeping pair. I stopped and glanced at him while he and the other two stood, unhappy about being woken up.
"Don't you want me to walk you home or... something?"
I gave him a warm smile
"It's fine, I had fun with you guys today, bye!"
I ran as fast as I could away from them waving goodbye. I felt bad for not telling him the truth but it couldn't be helped. This was my own problem. When I was surrounded by people again I took out the small slip of paper with an address written on it. I searched the city until I found the tall building that matched the address I had gotten from this person I had met over the internet. He said that he could get me a well-paying job here and help my dad pay our bills, maybe even get my dad some help.
It was worth a shot.
Soon I had found the building, rode the evaluator and I stepped out into a dark hallway. I held my elbows as I traveled further to an open door with a crack of light pouring out. I hesitantly reached out and lightly knocked on the door
"Come in." a voice soon answered. I sucked in a breath and pushed the door open and walked into the office-like room seeing several couches and a desk with someone in a chair behind it. I approached them slowly stopping a few feet from the paper covered desk, unsure of what to say I eyed around the room some more spying a strange looking checkerboard with mixed game pieces.
"So I'm going to assume that you're Emiko Sasaki."
I heard the man turn in his spinning chair and I turn to see him set his elbows down resting his head, his dark eyes scanning me. I nodded and he grinned even wider causing my body tense up suddenly. He gave me every wrong vibe I had felt in my whole life in a matter of a few seconds.
Without peeling his eyes away from mine he opened a drawer and pulled out a sealed envelope and slid it across the surface of his desk over to me.
"Here, this is your first delivery."
I picked it up and saw that there was another address written on the front, he read my confusion and added
"Take this to that location written there, come back, and you get paid, simple."
I lifted the weightless paper then put it in my bag
"Who do I give it to?" I finally asked.
He shook his head, a creepy smile still on his suspicious face.
"You'll know when you get there."
"Alright, so I'll be back later Mr...?"
"Izaya, just call me Izaya."
I gulped and walked out swiftly, but before I turned the corner to finally leave I heard him move a chess piece somewhere on the board. He chuckled sending a chill down my spine. I knew he was probably the last person I should work for, but I don't have many options left.
