Chapter 4

I clung onto my elbows tightly, trying to get rid of the sickening feeling the creep in the alley gave me. Normally I would've lost my cool and freaked out, but this is my job and I can't afford to lose it. After the two jobs after the last I made my way back to Izaya's and hit the elevator button, but when the doors opened there was someone else inside. On a motorcycle.

They must have come up from the garage on the bottom floor I guessed, I didn't think much of it since I had seen this rider a couple of times speeding in and out of the building. It even seems like we might have similar jobs. I stepped in and smiled politely at them, receiving a nod in return, and then we stood in the expected silence as the elevator rose floor after floor. We were half way to the top when I heard typing. I turned my head to see the rider was writing something on their phone. When they turned it to me I read the words on the screen read "Hi, I've seen you around here before. You work with Izaya don't you?" "Yeah, it's more like for though, I'm just his little messenger. Oh, sorry, I'm Emiko but you can call me Emi." They took the phone back and typed down some more, "It's nice to meet you Emi :) I'm Celty. I guess I'll see you around!" I read the last line just before Celty raced out of the elevator that just opened. Once she was out of my sight I sighed and started towards Izaya's "office". I knocked on his door twice and entered quickly. I walked in to find him, per usual, on the phone and stretched out in his chair with feet resting on a cluttered desk. He eyed me with an evil grin as I took a seat on the couch and waited for him to end the call. As soon as he snapped his phone shut he twirled his chair in my direction. "Ah, Emi. I see you've become more accustomed to our little routine here." I refused to make direct eye contact with him, his glares still gave me the creeps, "Yeah I guess so, where's the money for the last job?" He remained still for a few seconds then he turned to a desk drawer and pulled out an envelope. He plopped it down on the desk and I got up to retrieve it. "Someone's a little cranky? Maybe you should start taking earlier jobs so you can get a good nights sleep?" I scoffed at him "You and I both know the best paying jobs are at two in the morning." I sat back down on the couch and opened the envelope to count the money; I wasn't going to let him cheat me out of my hard earned cash. As I was counting Izaya spoke up, "Say Emi, how is your little friend Kida? Staying out of trouble?" I froze. Ever since the day I met Izaya he's become more and more curious about my life. But the weird part about it was that I'd never even mentioned Kida's name once, but he somehow seems to know about my life. Unlike everyone else in the world, he is able to see straight through my lies, through me, and I hate it. I don't know if somehow got ahold of my old school records, I don't know if he found the report from back in grade school. He wants to know everything about me and anything associating me with Kida. Even that fight all that time ago. I took a silent breath before resuming my counting, "He's fine." I said softly making Izaya's eyebrows rise in interest. "Still no progress with him, hmm? Ah well, I wouldn't take offense, he's got plenty of worries distracting him. Enough worries to keep him from even realizing what's right under his nose." I glanced up at him curiously, "What do you mean? Kida doesn't have a care in the world." he smirked and began to twirl in his chair. "I'm surprised you don't know honestly with you probably one of his closest friends, but now that I think about it, he probably only wants to keep you safe." I stood up and stopped his chair mid-spin and looked him straight in the eye for once. "What do I not know?! Is he in danger?!" I asked firmly, he smirked at me and then stood up abruptly making be back up a few feet. He craned his neck down to look me in the eye, "Do you really want to know?" I hesitated. I have to know, I can't let him get hurt again. Not like back in middle school. I won't let anything like that happen again. "Yes, I have to know." I stated as strongly as I could, he grinned then backed away to his desk drawer again. He opened it and pulled out a key that had a piece of paper taped onto it, he placed the key in my palm and I read the little note. "If you want to know so badly you might as well go and see for yourself. Find that address and you'll know the answer in no time." I looked at the address closely, it's almost on the other side of town, the bad side. I gripped the key in my palm before gently placing it in my pocket, I turned for the door without a goodbye when he called after me. "I hope you realize that Kida's trust in you is on the line if he finds out you discovered his little 'secret'?" before I shut the door behind me I looked back through the crack between the door and the frame, "I'm willing to risk my friendship and anything else with him in order to protect him. He had done the same for me a long time ago, and he would still do the same today." With that, I closed the door

~The next day~

Luckily it was Saturday, Mikado was working on some school work with Anri and Emi was as distant as she has been. But with none of them around I can get the answers I deserve. It won't be too hard finding Izaya, all I really have to do is wait for the next flying vending machine to come my way thanks to Shizuo. Not two seconds later a cry filled the air and a street sign crashed into a nearby building "IIIZZZAAAYYYAAA!!!"
Speak of the devil huh? Soon enough there was a bleached blonde Shizuo chasing after that rat Izaya both almost inhumanly fast. It wasn't long till Izaya had seen the alleyway where I stood and turned in swiftly before Shizuo could clobber him. Slightly out of breath he stood in the shadows for a moment that's when I decided to make my presence known. I crept up behind him, but accidentally kicked an empty can alerting him before I could surprise him. "Ahh, Masaomi! What a pleasant surprise! I was just wondering if you had visited Saki lately? Is she any better?" I tensed up at her name and the memory that came along with it every time, but I stood my ground in silence. "Cut the crap Izaya, I have a question for you." "Ask away, I'm an open book!" He leaned up against one of the alley walls and watched me with a far more intense glare. "One of my friends, Emiko, is apparently working for you now," I stated plainly and quickly. His eyes narrowed almost in amusement "Yes?"
