Sirens. All I could hear was sirens. I wasn't fully awake yet, I could tell by my blurry vision. I saw a shape lying on the floor, it looked like a person, but it wasn't moving, wasn't breathing. I saw other shapes moving toward the unmoving shape, they had a black cover that they put over the unmoving shape, then they took it away. They obviously hadn't noticed me lying in Gabriel's sock drawer. After I had fully woken up, I stretched and hopped onto the floor. There was an awful smell in the room that reminded me of rotting prey. I trotted to the kitchen where my food dish was. I started calling for my food, but there was no answer. Usually Gabriel would hear me, even though he's an elder. I started looking around the house for him. He wasn't here.
I sat at the door for days, it seemed, but he didn't come back. Then it hit me. He was never coming back. We were never really close, I was just a replacement for his last cat, Cherry. Sometimes he called me Cherry Blossom. I ignored it most of the time. I jumped onto the counter where he kept my dry food, in case of emergencies. I managed to pry the white lid off of the container, then I started eating. I needed my energy.
The forest gave me a bad feeling, but I needed to leave the neighbourhood.
