"Yep, the train tracks." Ray smiled. "Once I was on the train tracks, I ran for about a mile before stopping. Nobody can run forever."
"But, you're Ray," A boy said. "You did track and field. You won first place in distance!"
"That is true, but it was cold, Ray told him. "When I stopped, I only stopped for a second. Just to catch my breath. And I began running again. And eventually, it began to get dark. So, I decided to take a break. I slept on the ground close to the tracks, but out of sight." Ray said.
All night? Nobody noticed you?" I asked. "You booked it, they'd be searching everywhere."
"I as that hidden, I slept under a bush. Shelter and a hiding place." Ray winked. The kids oohed and ahhed. "By the time the sun came up, I was running again. But this time, a bit slower, to save energy. And being on the track team really paid off. I'd made it to town by Friday afternoon."
"Whoa." A few other patients said.
"Of course, I was tired. My legs were practically numb. I went to the closest convenience store, with barely a dollar in my pocket. I got a bottle of water and stole some other food." Ray said. "I then walked around town, just taking in the feeling of freedom. It felt, well, free. I found a spot to sleep in the park, and went to sleep almost instantly. But I was woken up by a police officer shining a flashlight in my face."
"Did they just cuff you, take you to the station, then take you back here?" I asked.
"Uh, yeah. Pretty much." Ray answered. "I was in tears when they took me in. I tried to stay positive by congratulating myself so making it so far."
"We were congratulating you back at the farm home." A boy told Ray.
"Hah! Really?"
We all nodded.
"Thanks, guys! Anyways, I was put in a holding cell, and I spent the night there. A police officer woke me up around three today, and told me that I had to do some paperwork and other legal stuff. They took my picture, fingerprinted me, had me fill out forms so they could put me in their database and a ton of other stuff."
"Dude, that sucks." I muttered.
"And, then I was brought back here." Ray said. "But, hey, I made it farther than last time." He smiled.
He's ran away twice?!?!
"Plus, it wasn't the middle of winter." He added.
A staff member peeked their head in. "Ray, you've got a doctor's appointment. Let's go."
Nodding, he got up from the table. Before he closed the door behind him, he waved to all of us.
The middle of winter. Wow.
