There was a sharp knock at my door.
"Allison? We're leaving in thirty minutes, I hope you're ready,"
I quickly sat up.
"Okay," I called.
I showered, finally getting changed out of my dress. I pulled on a pair of jeans and a thick, wooly cardigan. I didn't bring much with me - just a small overnight bag. I quickly packed it, then waited for the call from my mother.
We checked out of the hotel.
I didn't say a single word on the ride home.
When we arrived at the house that I call home, my mother pulled me aside.
"Allison, I want to talk to you about something,"
My heart sunk. She knew.
"Okay," I said slowly.
"Now, school is starting back next week, and you need a new schoolbag. That old one of yours is falling apart. Here's some money. Buy yourself a few nice outfits, too. Make a good impression," she smiled.
I forced a smile back. "Thanks, mom," I said, taking the money.
There was at least 500 here.
"Woah, mom, this is way too much-"
"Stop, it's fine. You earned it, okay?"
I looked at her. She smiled.
"Fine," I gave in. "Thank you."
"Anytime."
At that moment, the kitchen door flung open, and Ben, my little brother, stood beaming at me.
"Ally!" he yelled in joyous exclamation, running towards me. I laughed and picked him up, swinging him around.
"Ben, I missed you so much!"
He grinned. "I missed you too, Ally,"
I smiled, placing him carefully on the floor and kneeling down to his height.
"Are you excited to be starting big boy school next week?"
He nodded his head excitedly. He had waited for this moment for four long years.
"When can I go to your school?"
I laughed. "Not for a little while. You have to graduate kindergarten first."
He pouted. "No fair,"
"Don't worry, kindergarten is much more fun. You're lucky. Now who feels like watching Wall-E with me?"
He smiled. "I do," he chuckled.
"Me too," I smiled back.
...
Monday morning came faster than I would have hoped. After a long summer, it was time to return to school, for my final year.
I wasn't looking forward to it.
I reluctantly got dressed and ready for school. Walter wanted his driver to drop me off, but I refused. I liked walking. It wasn't far, and I enjoyed the fresh air. Plus having a driver was just... beyond weird.
I reached school pretty quickly. And then it was time to do it all over again. A whole new year. My last one.
"Hey, Allison," a voice said. I spun around and saw Georgia Greenback smiling at me. Georgia was nice - we had always sat together in art class. She shared the same passion that I had for it. We'd been friends since freshman year.
