Dear Diary,

Today was the day the Germans arrived at our town.

At the end of 1942, a man named Moishe the Beadle warned us of their cruelty, but no one listened to his cries. As my teacher, he brought me the faith I needed to pray.

Together, we studied the Zohar by analyzing each page to discover the very essence of each of its words.

I entranced myself into thinking he would help me enter eternity, but suddenly all foreign Jews, including Moishe the Beadle, were expelled from Sighet.

After many months passed, I saw him again and he told me about the cruelty of the Gestapo. They shot the prisoners and left them to die, but somehow, Moishe the Beadle escaped them with a wounded leg.

The Gestapo were instruments of Adolf Hitler, a man who assessed Jews as inferior to the "superior" Germans.

In the spring of 1944, the great news of the Russian front arrived at Sighet about the war and no one doubted the loss of Germany.

Sadly, we were very misinformed because the German Army vehicles arrived less than three days later. Contrary to my prior belief during the past few days with the Germans, they haven't done anything drastic.

Sincerely,

Elie
