It was 6:00am when Teto woke up - a world record! Neru shook her hard until she opened her eyes. Teto had insisted Neru stay at her house for the night, even though Neru wasn't too keen.
"Neru-chan! Please let me sleep some more!" cried Teto, burying her head in her pillow. Neru sighed, shaking her head. "Teto! Did you know extra credit goes to the contestants who sing songs they wrote themselves? If you want to write one, you'd better hurry - there's only two days left!" she said firmly. Teto sat up. She wanted to win, and extra credit would definitely help! Springing out of bed, Teto pulled out a pad of paper and grabbed her favourite pink pen. She then sat down on her bed and tried to think of a song to write. Thirty minutes passed by, and Teto was still thinking. Her paper was blank. Frustrated, Teto tossed her pen in the air. She groaned and hid under the covers.
"I give up! I'm a rubbish singer, and an even more rubbish songwriter! I'd never win!" she sobbed. Neru rolled her eyes. Teto had thrown a similar tantrum a few months back, when she dropped her ice-cream on the ground by accident. "Stop being a big baby, Teto-chan! You CAN write a song, and you know you're great at singing! Let me try!" she sighed. Neru took the paper and pen from Teto's hands and began to write. Teto peered at her work and gasped.
My heart is soaring beyond the sky,
I'm so elated and I hear you ask why,
Well, the answer to that is easy to say,
Now let me tell you before I fly away...

I have the freedom to sing! I have the freedom to sing!
I'm not being forced, it's out of pure joy!
I have the freedom to sing! I have the freedom to sing!
I want to share my happiness with you!

I have the freedom to sing! I have the freedom to sing!
I want to pour my heart out with these lyrics!
I have the freedom to sing! I have the freedom to sing!
I want to share my happiness with you!

"Wow! That's absolutely fantastic! You're outstanding, Neru-chan!" cried Teto, giving her friend a big shock. Blushing, Neru pushed back a string of her hair. She seemed somewhat happy, but embarrassed as well for some reason.
"I...I used to write songs at home. I enjoyed it very much and wanted to be a songwriter. But my family wanted me to be a doctor, since we were poor and needed someone to get a well-paid job. They made me abandon my passion," she said, wiping a tear with her sleeve. Immediately, Teto felt sympathetic. Neru-chan sure had gone through tough times.
"I ran away from home when I was fourteen and also wanted to join a singing group like the Vocaloids. And I did!" Neru felt a bit stronger now, and was no longer upset by her rough past. She turned to Teto, who was silent for once, and gave her a warm smile.
"Well, Teto? Ready to try writing a song together?" she asked. A determined expression was now on Teto's face.
"You bet!" she replied, taking the pen and writing down a few lyrics of her own.
