Grand Mage of Alterum

Prologue

Magic a concept of imagination and manifestation of ones control of mana around an environment. Mana is not limitless, it can be consumed and depleted by transforming it to any form one can think of doing. Once depleted it takes time before the used mana returns to its natural state.

That is why magican started to think of ways of utilizing mana efficiently. Using less amount of mana burn, and increasing its effect took them years of research and development. It pave the way of using specialized spells that is so efficient that using it pays little amount of mana being used and at the same time converts mana burn to raw mana a complete cycle of energy, a self supporting spell, a perpetual mana converter was discovered.

Perpetual mana converter is a concept wherein the use of mana negates the resistance and consumption of mana. A technique of utilizing the form mana into ones self and converting it internally into
a higher and purer form of mana. Releasing the resistance and consumption of mana in an area into just about 1 meter radius around the casters area. Once it is converted, it releases new purer mana while the conversation takes place, in which an abundant amount of energy can be utilized into a spell while the perpetual mana conversion (PMC or mana furnace) is active. A technique that will take years into practice for it to be a practical use. But the outcome of utilizing such techniques provided a wide application never before seen.

With this, the use of mana now has now increased which led the world into a massive development. New invention and technology boomed, and over the past century magicians wanted more. They started in investigating application of special alchemical elements and imbued it into the body as tattoos. By using different rune and spell formation, they tattoo this into the body. The result is a rapid increase in mana conversion shorter spell output, increase in physical capabilities, in short body modification through rune tattoos.

Other development soon followed. Technology development, such as a person with limited capabilites of utilizing the mana furnace now has the ability to use mana furnace by just using a smart phone built with the capability to use mana furnace. Utilizing such technology has draw backs the amount of mana converted is limited by the technology. It was made that way to prevent abuse of the technology. Only the military and law authorities have the limiter turned off and before such technology, magicians utilized wands and staffs, now in the age of digital magic such equipment is now obsolete, using smaller digital gadgets became the norm. Even clothing, accessories and armors has benefited from such developments.

With the world filled with such progress in magic, there is a place that is used to nurture young magicians. A place called academy city, it where all magicians learn to grasp the power to utilize mana. An island city situated at the center of the famous Bermuda triangle. A magically made island where no country has jurisdiction over its government. A place where all magicians respects and fear, the place where Arch magus resides, a power of the world that has no match in terms of magic development and military capacity.

Our story starts in such area. A new graduate from the academy of science and applications Keith Von Zeta thats me. I was supposed to leave academy city to go home on vacation and then apply to do research on alpha centauri where several expedition are being conducted. It has been 8 years since I came in academy city so I kind of missed home.

But it turned out not quite the way I planned it. My mentor and professor Arch mage Anthony Cruz, beg me to take his place in the academy for a few weeks, so that he will be approved to go on a vacation down on one of Jupiter's moons for a safari. Come to think of it, it was just 5 years ago that they teraformed the place. I heard that their hot springs are amazing, it rejuvenates and recovers your youth. Thats one way to get younger, quite a luxury for a vacation prof!

After a few weeks of teaching, its time for me to be on my way! 《Oh! Freedom!!》I shouted along the way to my apartment. This alley is my most used route towards my place, I like it as it is not crowed and with just a short walk I'm there. I could just teleport, but due to academy rules and regulations using of any form of teleportation is prohibited. Don't want some spy like ninja coming in academy city.

Within that alley, I could sense a strange feeling, like the tingling of my senses. Then I felt my body is being pulled, I tried resisting it. My internal grimoire of records (IGOR for short) kicks in and sounds of alarm came in. 《Master alert, systems detected anomalies within the vicinity, calculation of probabilities 95% forceful transportation. Suggest to activate contingencies.....》IGOR is my assistant, every researcher has one. It helps in our research in magic theories and applications. It has gained a massive amount knowledge of the world.

I tried resisting, pulled in all my concentration in dealing with this powerful pull. All I could think about was is this a prank?! And if it is, I would practically blow them to kingdom come!! I shouted:《Ok! If you want me to play this game, then its game on!》 Then suddenly a flash came in, i was blinded for a second, surprise from the light and sound from the lighting. I let go of my concentration.

Within a few seconds i tried to recover but then i realized that I'm not in the alley anymore. Looking around, I saw 3 people are coming out of the teleportation array. As for me I readied my self for a counter. As a graduate of the academy we have 3 years of combat training before we go to one of our specialties. It is mandatory so that we could understand well how to use mana effectively and in turns helps us in our next field of studies. It is experience to gain knowledge.

I tried to compose myself and see what happens next. Around us, I could see a magic formation, a crude one at that. What happened next blew my mind.
