(18 years later)
Cole woke up suddenly from his dream. He lifted his head and glanced around, he smiled as he looked at Peter. Peter looked so calm in his sleep, Cole glanced at his clock "6:45..." he whispered to himself. He laid back trying to go back to sleep, but as he lay there memories flooded his mind. Memories of the island and the Spirit Bear, of Peter and Garvey, of how he ended up here.
Cole finally deciding he couldn't sleep, stepped out of bed. Trying not to wake Peter or his daughter Lora, he tiptoed down stairs. It was October second, and Cole decided to make breakfast before anyone woke up. He took the eggs and bacon from the fridge, and took a pan from the cupboard, along with three plates. Cole cracked three eggs into a bowl and stirred it up, he then turned on the stove.
Cole carefully placed three strips of bacon on the pan, sitting on the stove. Cole listened to the sounds of the bacon cooking, the cracks and pops of the bubbles. Cole thought more about what he remembered from years ago. He thought about when he had asked Peter to marry him, of how happy he had been when Peter had excitedly said "YES, YES, YES!!!" Cole smiled to himself. He remembered when they had adopted Lora 8 years ago.
Cole's thinking was interrupted by the sound of Peter coming down the stairs. When Peter saw Cole cooking breakfast he said "Good morning Cole, but uh do you need some help?" Cole looked at him puzzled and then look down at the bacon which had started to burn. Embarrassed Cole quickly flipped the bacon on the un-cooked side. "Thank's, but I got this Peter," Cole responded.
"Whatever you s-s-s-say," Peter stuttered. Cole looked back down at the bacon trying to hide his guilty face, even it having been 20 years later Cole still felt bad about hurting Peter. Peter walked over to the front door, and was surprised to see mail this early in the morning. Peter picked it up and read allowed who it was for, "It's for you Cole," Peter said walking back into the kitchen. Cole was putting the half-burnt bacon on the three plates, and was starting on the eggs.
"Oh yeah," Cole responded, "Who's it from?" Peter glanced at the address, "It says it's from Garvey." Cole looked up from the eggs and said "really? He hasn't sent me a letter for years now." Cole retreated the eggs over to Peter and took the letter excitedly.
Cole read allowed, "Dear Cole Matthews, we are very sorry to inform you that Garvey has passed away in his sleep, on September 30th of 20XX. His funeral will take place on Sunday, October 8th, at the Churkie Minneapolis Church, during 12:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. central time. We hope to see you there to share the fond memories of Garvey, with us. Sincerely Garvey's family,"
Cole slipped into his seat holding his head. "I-I can't believe he's gone," Cole whispered to himself. Peter had finished the eggs and ran over to Cole, he looked right into Cole's eyes, and hugged him. Cole started to cry into Peters shoulder, "P-Peter," he tried his best to say in-between sniffles. "Shh," Peter said, "It'll be ok, Im here for you."
They sat there holding each other, in silence, until they heard quiet, little, footsteps coming down the stairs. Cole and Peter quickly let go of each other, and Cole wiped away his tears. Lora poked her head from the side of the stairs, and when she noticed Cole and Peter she tried to run back up the stairs. "Hey Lora," Peter shouted up the stairs "good morning, come down, we made breakfast." Reluctantly Lora turned around and came back down the stairs.
As Lora walked into the the kitchen she noticed the dread in the air. "Who died?" Lora asked jokingly. Peter and Cole traded glances, "well," Peter started. Cole didn't look up, "I'm sorry, but I'm not very hungry, and I'd rather not be here when Peter explains this to you." Cole stood up and left the kitchen.
Lora watched surprised, Cole didn't normally act like that. "Whats going on," she asked worried, "Why is Cole acting like that?" Peter looked down at his food and then back at her, "we..." Peter started again, "well, we have just received some bad news..." Peter picked at his food "w-w-we've just got a letter inviting us to Garvey's funeral..." Peter explained. "Cole is very, upset about the whole thing," Peter continued.
"Oh..." Lora said, understanding what was happening. She looked down, Peter glanced at the clock. "It's almost 7:30," Peter said "you should start getting ready for school." Lora took a bite out of the bacon and cringed at the burnt taste. Cole walked back into the kitchen, he looked better.
Lora tried another bite of the bacon, and then asked "who made this bacon, it taste horrible." Cole blushed with embarrassment and then answered "*cough cough* uh Peter did." Peter immediately looked at Cole, he tried to say "wha-" but was interrupted by Lora "really because this is a knew low for you Peter," she said, as she winked at Cole. Peter glanced back and forth at her and Cole, he opened his mouth to say something, but quickly closed it. Cole glanced at Peter "What?" Cole asked "cat got your tongue?"
Peter stuck his tongue out at Cole. Lora stood up, leaving the rest of her breakfast un-touched. "Well," she said, walking out of the kitchen "I've got a school to go to." She left the kitchen and Cole started to giggle. Peter didn't look at Cole, Cole went over to Peter, he grabbed his hand and lifted him up. Cole held Peter close to him, and gave him a quick peck on the lips.
