i slowly opened my eyes. it took me a while to figure out where i was because it was so gloomy and depressing. i realised it was merely just my beautiful cottage.

i sat up and padded out to the living room, expecting to see ruby and james cuddled up on the sofa, but i could only see james.

"hey, jam, where's ruby?" i asked.

"she went to her parents house. apparently they've both been revived." he replied with a solemn look on his face.

"oh, poor roo. i hope she's okay."

"yeah, me too." james said, his voice cracking at the end. i realised he was not in the mood to talk, so i went back to my room to get dressed.

when i was finished, i stepped outside only to see the most haunting thing in the universe. houses whose people had all been revived started to fade away, piece by piece. i stood and watched as ruby sat in front of what once was her parents house, but now it is merely rubble on the ground. i felt the earth beneath my feet shake as another poor family's house crumbled to the ground.

i shouted ruby's name as her skin slowly turned to grey, and her veins popping out and becoming more clearer. she can't leave. not yet.

i ran over to her greying form, and dragged her over to our house. she weakly mumbled inaudible words - but as i got her on the front steps of our house she grabbed my face with her cold hands and whispered "find... cure...".

her eyes rolled to the back of her head and she fell limp in my arms. i desperately called out to her, and james must have heard my cries and ran outside too.

"oh... oh my god. oh my god. shit. this has got to be a joke right? she's fine, right?" he rushed out, tears pricking his eyes, "i can't live without her."

"james, come on. you can live on. that's what she would have wanted. you know that if we die here we'll go back to the real world too. that's not what she had wanted. she said something to me about a cure so maybe if-"

"no. i'm not doing it without ruby." James cut me off, eyes locked onto her grey face.

"don't be stupid, jam."

"at least i actually care that she's gone! you just want to go gallivanting away to fine some cure that probably doesn't exist!"

"fine, if you're going to be such an ass about this, then i'll do it myself. i don't need you." and with that, i waslked away from james, watching the world crumble around me.

when i came here i was told this would be my paradise forever. but no, this is hell.
