me and hael collected way too many samples, but that's okay. the more the merrier i guess. we headed back to the lab and laid out the samples. honestly, i'm not quite sure what i'm even looking for.

i hesitated as i stuck a needle into hael's arm. she didn't flinch at all. i'm impressed. i've always hated needles, but you get used to them i guess.

~~~~~
we slaved away in the lab, and i never realised how long it had been. we've been spending 15 hours doing all of this to get nothing at all. i think i'm going to have to go on an adventure.
since hael was tired after all the poking and prodding i did to her, she said that i should go without her because time is precious nowadays. i hastily obeyed and ventured out the door with a map, a torch, some snacks and a small pen knife in case i meet any danger. i once again advanced towards the tall iron gates and walked towards the rubble of what once was a village.
the beautiful modern house that was not far from here had also gone, and it such a short time too. this research better work. just as i reached the village, it started to rain terribly, and i realised that i forgot my coat. i figured that this was the least of my problems right now and just walked on. i've always loved the rain, anyway.
~~~~~

it got dark so quick, and i began to hear mysterious shuffling and scratching around me. i turned on the light and was terrified at what is before me. there are three men checking through the houses of the fallen, all of them covered head to toe in black - much like a silhouette. i decided to hide, as i don't know what these shadows' intentions were. i watched one of them closely as they found a poor little boy crouched by the side of a house. the shadow grabbed the boy my his neck and lifted him up. the boy let out a blood curdling scream as the shadow opened its mouth and let out a black mist, which made its way into the boys already open mouth. his eyes rolled to the back of his head as his skin slowly turned grey and his veins blue. he fell limp in the shadow's grasp, and it threw him into the rubble. i was frozen in terror as i saw the shadow grow slightly more due to the life it just took from the boy.

i turned away in disgust and tears pricked my eyes. what were they? they weren't human. are they whats taking all of our people? i figured that i should retreat back to hael's house before i get caught too. that poor boy.

i silently ran back towards the direction of the house and hoped that they don't see me.

~~~~~
i slammed open the gate and locked it tightly shut and doing the same to the front door when i got in. i must've woke hael up, because she came running down the stairs, terrified.
"what the fuck anna? you gave me a heart attack," she rushed out.
"i'm so sorry, i ran here as quick as i could. i just couldn't believe my eyes."
"what do you mean? what did you see?"
and with that, i told hael everything i saw.
she cupped her mouth with her hand and gasped, "that's disgusting! what are we going to do now?"
"i think our only option we have left now is to fight against them. maybe, if we capture one i could get some samples from it. if there even is a cure, that is."
"what, are you saying that this is some sort of apocalypse? that's actually pretty cool! i mean, aside from the boy... i wonder if that's how everyone was taken?"
"who knows. i think we should rest until tomorrow and explore. we can't stay here though, they'll find us. i guess i'll figure it out in the morning."
"sure thing. g'night, anna!"
"night hael."
~~~~~

i woke up with a start, and realised it was already 11 am. i quickly got dressed and ran downstairs to find hael using a treadmill. honestly, thats the weirdest thing i've seen apart from those creepy shadow people.

"hael what the shit."

"hey! i like to keep in shape okay. are you ready to go? i know you just woke up but still."

"sure, lets go."

we packed everything we needed to survive and set out on our journey. it wasn't long before we reached the start of the village, and i could see the shadow people there, looking for any survivors. i tugged hael behind a pile of bricks to hide ourselves.

"what the-"

"shut up. look! there they are!"

"anna there's nothing there."

"yes there is! are you blind! see those tall... shadows creeping around the houses?"

"no, really, there's nothing there. i can see the houses and all the rubbish but no shadows. are you sure you're not hallucinating?"

"no, i'm positive. i watched one suck the life out of a boy for god's sake."

"ugh, stop. you're not funny. that's not something to joke about, anna."

and with that she shrugged my hand off her arm and sauntered on into the village. are there literally no decent people around here? honestly, she has a death wish. i run after her anyway, taking the knife out of my pocket just in case.

"dude, seriously?! there's nothing ther-"

i whipped my head around to see a shadow holding her by the neck, her face froze with fear. i leaped over to the shadow and slashed at its arm just as it opened its mouth. it turned around as the mist returned back to the shadow. it grew larger and towered above me as it still had hael within its grasp. i slashed again at its neck and it let out an ear piercing screech, let go of hael and shrunk into nothingness.

"that. was. so. cool!!"

"hael, seriously?! you could have died if it weren't for me. are you 100% sure you can't see them?"

" i don't know, i think that now that i've had an encounter with one i can see it. its so weird. and freaky. but how come you could see them all along and i couldn't until i almost died?"

i looked at her solemnly and shook my head. i didn't even know either. but what i do know is that we have to fight.
