So this was a little doodle I did for Inktober with the prompt hunger. [Spoilers here] Now Losing Hope ends with Hope getting left behind in Vietnam at the end of the war (I will avoid going into details) like many MWDs did. Most got put down, some go handed over to the South Vietnamese Army. Out of the 4,000-5,000 dogs that deployed (I'll have to check those numbers) only 200 dogs came back to the states. I don't even know what happened to Hope after Hunter set her loose in the jungles (the story ends shortly after), but I've assumed she starved to death or got shot by the Viet Cong.
The writing below the picture says: Perhaps I should've shot her then... Maybe it would've been a kinder fate.
I also don't know what Hunter thinks of the whole thing looking back on it, but I assume after many years he comes to regret his decision and realizes he sent her to a much slower, more painful death in his foolishness and selfishness, sparing himself the burden of seeing her killed or killing her himself. He couldn't bear to kill his best friend and instead let her suffer. My poor beans both suffered in the end because I'm a cruel writer.
I drew this on October 4th 2016 and was just flipping through my sketchbook and found it and decided to put it up here.
