I gulped peeking at Alex and then looked at the floor. “I was at my sister’s. Why?”

“Why?” He mused. “I’ve called every damn hospital in this city. Every last one of them. How difficult is that to leave a note that you might go to visit her?” He shouted at me.

“I wasn’t going to,” I retorted sheepishly. “It came unexpected.”

“How about calling me and letting me know?”

I got angry, he was preaching me like some schoolgirl. “You don’t explain yourself to me. Why should I inform you about each of my moves? Sorry, to call you haven’t crossed my mind. I was under impression that you want me to stay right here.” I gestured separating invisibly the living space on my half and his.

To withhold myself from escalating the quarrel, I spun around and marched to my bedroom.

“You are taking it out of the proportion!” He got up and went after me.

“I’m not taking anything out of anywhere,” I pulled my jacket off feeling very hot, the fight made my blood boil. I advanced to the closet and nervously tried to fix it on the hanger. “It was you who made stupid rules, as if I don’t understand boundaries and would interfere into you personal life somehow,” I muttered. “You made it very clear about what you expect from me, as clear as possible, transparent clear...” I finally managed to close all the buttons and shut the closet with a bang.

“What you did was childish.” He creased his brows angrily not backing off.

“I’m sorry,” I puffed and paused. “How could I know that you might get worried? I’m not a mindreader, you know. From what I understood you want me out of here, or maybe I picked the massage wrong. I told you that if you want me out you should tell me it into my face, and not showing it that ridiculous way. I understand things. I’m not a bad guy. I do understand that you want to make things right, and you could never expect it to be that difficult. I know, I know...because I could never picture it to be that difficult too. I understand everything, except why you let your friends wipe their feet all over me? It is unsettled in my life now, but I’m somebody too. I'm a human being with my own pride and my own feelings.” I looked away from his face and slowly strolled to the window.

“If you want me out, tell me now. I will not think bad of you because of that. I can’t think bad of you...So, do you want me to go. Think how easy it will be again...no worries, no unnecessary drama,” I gave him a swift glance and continue staring outside on the river current. A long silence hang in the air. I was getting depressed from uncertainty. “Jesus Christ, Alexandre Dark,” I cried out in irritation. “Do you want me to go or not.” I pirouetted and stopped right in front of him.

“No,” he inhaled. “No, I don’t want you to go,” he creased his brows, “but if you once more will have a family emergency, please, find a second of your time to let me know, so I don’t have to go crazy. Because of you, I’ve missed an important meeting.”

I rolled my eyes feeling deep down inside an impossible explosion of satisfaction. Then I wheeled around him to the corridor. “I’ve already apologized. I’m sorry. I didn’t expect it myself to happen. I’ve missed my interview too, you know.”

He walked after me into the corridor. “What happened?”

I picked up my purse from the floor of the entrance parlor and dived inside to find my cellphone. I pulled it out and marched back into my room to plug it to the charger. “I was on the phone with my sister when somebody came to see her. She gave the receiver to my niece, and Charlie placed it on the side of the table so it slipped and crashed. Before it happened, I’ve heard Billy arguing with someone saying that she didn’t want somebody to enter her house. I called back, her landline had been busy and she haven’t pick up her cellphone, then I called my brother-in-law and his phone was off. I didn’t know what to think, I just dropped all my things and run to see if she was all right.”
