The room floor lullabied me, and it was the first thing that had met me the next morning. Slowly I lifted my head to look around and noticed how dim light was penetrating through the curtains. I forced myself up grabbing the edge of the desk and checked the time. It was half past seven and I didn't expect Alex to be home. Cautiously I turned around and headed for the door.
Half crawling I reached the bathroom. I was cold, shivering. With shaking hands I reached the tap and turned the shower on. When the water started running warm I stepped under the flow and let my skin absorb the warmth. It saved me again relaxing my stiffed muscles, but I couldn't let myself stay and just enjoy the sensation. I made myself to pick up shampoo and wash my hair even though each move hurt me physically.
Robotically, I prepared myself for the interview dressing myself into my finest spacial occasion suit, the only one left. I organized my hairdo, then put some lipstick on and making sure I had everything in place, hit the road.
Again, downtown area was my final destination, but this time I took a cab, there was no sunshine in this world for me any longer even though the day was sunny.
In the lobby of a very impressive building, I was given a pass and instructed on the security measures. I guess, the company was a real big shot, I even had to pass through a metal detector. I got into the elevator and when it reached the right floor I scanner the pass and the doors slid open into a huge reception area. Hesitantly I made a step forward and instantly my eyes started in taking a splendid interior of the hall. Glass was everywhere making the space light and airy and the furniture was modern, but of a classy kind. The surrounding for sure made a firm statement of the executive level of this floor where all high management of the company was located.
The receptionist smiled at me as if I brought her her paycheck, and when I named myself, she immediately invited me into a very elegant conference room with a huge conference table in the middle and the windows opening onto a charming view of Manhattan. I greeted some people in the room and took my seat.
Everything in the air spoke of seriousness of the company, including a businesslike attitude of the personnel. That little fact, that exactly at ten zero zero, the doors of the smaller allowance had opened and my name was called out made me respect it right away and hold a pride for being here for an interview.
Three person met me each shaking my hand. One was an old gentleman in a classy suit, another was a woman in a spotless attire with red lipstick and curled hair, and the third was another gentleman of a middle age who looked as polished as the lady. The younger man started the interview beginning with usual questions about the choice of my career. Then the lady continued with reviewing my resume, digging deeper into my professional life. Then they began asking me more personal things about my life outside the job. The old gentleman sat silent. He didn't even look at me only reluctantly following the conversation. His expression was bored pleading for me to finish already with my stuff.
"Why do you think you can work for this company? What does separate you from the rest of the applicants for that position? What makes you a better fit for us?" The lady pleasantly smiled and fixed her curious eyes on me awaiting for my response that supposed to woo her and make me the it girl.
"I'm an excellent lawyer. Good at my job and hardworking," I immediately retorted and grew silent right after the last word left my mouth.
"Is that all?" She addressed to the old man. He nodded and I understood that the appointment was over. "Do you want to add something else?" She smiled to me again.
"No," I stirred to get up and saw rather disappointed eyes of the trio. I expected some sort of intimidation inside of me to rise and chase me out of the room fast, but instead I got mad at myself. I was not just a good attorney. Any other attorney who was selected for this position was good. "Actually, I have something to add," I stood up. "I know that the school I graduated is not one of the top law schools, but it doesn't mean that I'm lacking any knowledge. I'm as good as the rest. What really makes me a better fit is that I came from a small town and my mother raised me and my sister singlehandedly on a nurse allowance. It didn't stop me from getting a law degree. If I came all the way here, imagine how far I can go. I know my job well. I'm accurate and honest. Now that's probably all."
