♥ Chapter One ♥

"We want that one," I said, pointing to the bag in my anatomy teacher's hands.

"Kennedy...that one is kinda, you know, a little big...don't you think?"

"It's perfect," I informed Tricia as I eyed up the bag.

"How are we supposed to get that skinned in an hour?" Piper added. I rolled my eyes, these girls had no faith in me. "I mean, I'm all for learning but..." she eyed the bag, "I'm not a very hands on person if you catch my drift."

My anatomy teacher reached into the bag and grabbed the waterlogged cat by its hind legs, pulling it out with a clean jerk. Preservatives fell out on the floor, barely missing my feet.

"Ew!" Tricia shrieked as she jumped back a step.

"I'm going to be sick," Piper voiced, covering her mouth with her hand as she gagged at the smell of the formaldehyde.

I held out my dissection tray as Mr. Landeen slapped the wet, orange cat down on it. He gave me a knowing smile as I thanked him and got out of line, heading over to a clear lab table.

I set my tray down on one of the black lab tables and began rummaging around for the supplies I would need. Pins, scalpels, scissors...it wasn't like I hadn't skinned anything before, I had taken numerous summer courses through the college and my uncle was a taxidermist, so skinning much of anything was an easy enough task for someone with my level experience.

"Just to let you know," Tricia leaned over my shoulder, eyeing up the cat with disgust. "That thing is so gross."

"Want to touch it?" She frowned at me as I pulled up the loose skin in the armpit and slit it before starting to skin down the arm, slowly cutting away the spongey fascia that held the skin down to the muscle of the animal.

"It even smells dead," Piper voiced.

"That would be because it is." Mike added, leaning over her shoulder as he hugged her from behind. Piper turned on him and swatted the blonde boy away playfully. He held up his own cat in defense, a small bloated black one, and she yelped, jumping back and running into me.

"Piper," I snapped as the scapula ran up and jabbed into my finger. I dropped the sharp tool and ripped off my glove, shoving her away as the blood started to bead up and run down my finger.

"Eep!" Piper covered her eyes. She had a rather soft stomach and wasn't one to enjoy the sight of blood.

I grumbled at her and gave her a hard shove in the shoulder before walking over to the sink and turning it on. My stupid group was doing nothing but getting in the way, they probably wouldn't even be able to help for the next three days of dissections. No wonder why they were failing this class.

I ran my hand under the warm water and winced as the pressure pulled at my cut, the water wicking away what was left of the blood.

"I'll go get Mr.Landeen," Mike huffed as he set his cat down and went to the other side of the lab. I grabbed the soap and started to scrub at the deep incision in my finger. It wasn't like I would need stitches, but super glue wouldn't be a bad idea.
