-Author's Note-
This is a short story about Trico from The Last Guardian. I recently finished watching Jacksepticeye's series playing it. I got so emotional and just had to write about it. This contains spoilers about the ending of the game. And if you haven't seen it yet, you should. Byeeee!
It has been 20 years since the great tower had been destroyed. Children could live in peace, without the fear of being taken by the beats. The last two remaining beasts, the Trico, had mated. The species grew. There are now more than 200 of them. They continue to grow. But my Trico, the one who I saved, and the one who saved me, is getting old. He used to visit me often, but now he can barely make the flight. I make my way through the ruins of my past, awakening memories that had long been forgotten. On the floors are littered with broken barrels. The children used to be the energy source for the beasts, but those dark days are behind us. For now, the barrels are filled with a spectacular golden light. The beasts harnessed the power of lightning. They thrived from it. In the distance, through the caves, I can hear the low grumbles of sleeping beasts. It's almost dawn. Creeping through the intricate caves and tunnels, I make my way to the heart of the nest. The darkness consumes everything in it's path. But as I get closer, I can make out the faint, glowing circles in the darkness. I know this is my Trico.
"Trico" I whisper. In a fit of excitement, the great beast's eyes widen and I can hear it desperately trying to get to it's feet. I run towards him, feeling the familair stones beneath my feet. The stones where I once walked as a child. Trico gets up and bounds towards me. He's not as fast as he used to be, but still acts like a child. "Are you ready for one last flight?" I ask. He lets out a whine of happiness. I smile and turn around. I suddenly feel a gush of wind and am lifted into the air. Trico's soft beak is clamped around my robes. A rush of emotion fills me as the memory of Trico saving me from falling from a cliff comes back to me. He bounds through the cave, running at full speed towards the exit. Trico smashes through the exit and launches into the air. The bright light of the outside world nearly blinds me. I am suddenly thrown into the air before falling onto the ruffled feathers of Trico's back. I hold on tightly as Trico starts beating his wings harder, flying upwards towards the freedom of the sky. Letting out a roar of pride, he eventually levels out. It's very peaceful above the clouds. The only thing you can hear is the soft rush of wind and the heavy breaths of the beast below me. My best friend. My fingers trace Trico's back and I feel the scars from battles with his own kind. Before they were free. Tears threaten to spill over my eyes as I recall the times we had. The puzzles we had solved. The battles we had won. Together. A laugh escapes my lips as I climb further up to the beast's neck and rub the spot around his large horns. Trico lets out a purr of pleasure. This would calm him. Whenever he had to fight. He trusted me. And I know that whatever he does now, I'll trust him.
I realise that my friend has started to fly downwards, I'm confused for a moment before realising that he was heading towards my home village. Had the flight really been that short? He touches down, landing perfectly. The village is still asleep. Quietly, he lowers his head and lets me down. I slide from his neck and Trico moves into a sitting position. I smile at him. He seems to smile back. His left eye still partly closed from where he got a scar those many years ago. I don't want this to end. I can tell that he doesn't either. He is very weak now. I know he won't make the flight back. My heart rate increases and tears make my vision go blurry. Trico lets out a concerned whine and gently pushes his face into me. I hold it tightly, nuzzling my face into the soft fur of his beak. After what would seem like forever to some, but just a moment to me, Trico pulls away. I try hard to swallow the lump in my throat. He looks deeply into my eyes before turning away. He tests his wings and gets ready to pounce over the trees. "Trico" I say, tears dripping down my cheeks. He turns his head to me one. I give him a small nod and a smile. He gives a small, but happy grumble back before turning his head and launching into the sky. And he was off, flying steadily into the distance. Just as he was about to disappear into the distance, I saw his head turn one last time. Then he was gone. I know he will not return. But I know I will see him again, in one reality or another. I will. And we'll fly again. Beyond the limits of reality. Just the two of us. Together.
