Chapter 1
In The Beginning
Today was my first day of my final year at school; putting my old scrappy bag on my back and my huge duffel bag in my hand. I knew that this was the turning point of my life. I stared in the mirror my dark chocolate brown hair just came short of my waist; my mother loves my hair she says it was a gift that she would never get and was happy that I got it. I quickly put on some eye liner and mascara; it really brought out my sapphire eyes. Mum was calling me from outside. I ran down the stairway and out the front door. I jumped in the car ready to go. It only took us five minutes to get there. The tall gates that would always make me feel like I was small and helpless stared down at me, I shivered. I noticed the teacher greeting and monitoring the students as they walked by.
I got out and said my goodbyes to my parents like every other time my mother shed a tear. I smiled and wiped it away, “Mum I will be fine” I said in a comforting voice. She smiled “I know I just can’t keep myself from worrying”. Dad started up the car; I backed up and took one last glance at my loving parents.
Mum was waving at me and started crying again. The car turned on the next corner and was out of sight. My duffel bag was still on the asphalt next to my leg I picked it up by the handle and walked towards the entrance.
My best friend was waiting at the gate for me, when she saw me she ran at me; she threw her body around me the force made me stagger backwards. She pulled back to quickly and I almost fell over.
“Stella I am so happy to see you” she stuttered out, I started to giggle at her slightly nasal voice that only appeared when she was excited. She knew what that giggle was for and shot me a look that could kill. “Hello Vicky I can see nothing’s changed”.
I looked past her and saw her bag already jazzed up with ribbon, glitter and graffiti; right at the front it said ‘Vicky rules’ in big block letters. The bell rang. She started dragging me by my wrist towards her bag. I pulled away as she picked up her bag and slid it onto her back. Her suitcase was bulging at the sides, obviously it was over packed.
We stared heading towards the auditorium. Vicky wouldn’t be quiet; she kept on going on about how great here holiday was at the Philippines. Then she stopped dropped her bag to the ground and unzipped it, her suitcase toppled backwards as she did.
“What are you doing” I said, “Were going to be late!” Then she pulled out a beautiful shell necklace out of her bag and handed it to me. All of my worries were forgotten. I Gasped it was so beautiful I couldn’t begin to describe it. “T-thank-you” I stuttered out.
A big grin spread across her face. “When I saw it, it reminded me of you”. I smiled “that’s a little bit cheesy isn’t it?” She slapped my arm hard; I slapped her back and started rubbing my right arm. I put it in my pocket at the same time saying that I would try it on when we got to the dorms.
We finally made it to the Auditorium. When we made it through the front doors, we realised we were late. Everyone turned around in their seats, I noticed some people I knew, Caitlyn Trans, Rachel Barring, Eddy Salmon and of course Fiona Sand.
Fiona was the most popular person at school and she completely hated me, she was shotting daggers at me through her eyes. A male teacher walked up to us and showed us to our seats. Everyone was staring at us, like we were aliens from outer space.
The male teacher introduced himself as Mr.Williamson before he jogged up to the stage and started to talk again, “Welcome to your final year of high school at Shadow High”. Vicky grunted and tried spooking me as she always did; she thought that the schools name fit exactly to what it looked like.
