The Phone Call

Anna

I walk around the house, cleaning up some things. I should ask Chrom what he wants for dinner. We might have to order takeout.

I approach his office, and prepare to knock on the door.

"Yes! I am well aware of that!"

I pause, and listen to Chrom.

"Well, maybe I'm perfectly happy with the work I'm doing!"

Who is he talking to?

"Well it's not about money, dad. I work for the sake of people! I help out Emm in anyway I can, and we have been doing just fine!"

He's talking to his father... he's never really mentioned him before...

"I know. I know. Well maybe I don't want to run your company someday! This isn't a monarchy, dad! Just find someone else to do your work when you retire! I'm not gonna do it!"

What is happening?

"I'm not going to move all the way there! I'm perfectly happy being here in Ylisse City! All my friends and family are here!"

My heart begins to beat faster. Moving?! What are he and his father talking about?

"Oh, it's not like you've ever been in my life!"

My eyes go wide. Now what's going on?! I'm tempted to go into the room.

"Yes. Yes, I do. Who told you? Mom? Of course. It's not like you'd ever care about that. You've never cared about my life."

Oh, Chrom...

"Excuse me?!"

Oh gods, what happened?!

"How dare you speak about her that way! She's not the one keeping me in one place! My friends and work are! And that's not a bad thing! I love it here! This is my home!"

Are they talking about me?!

"How could you say something like that?! To your own son?! Dad, I will not listen to you talk about Anna like that! You can disrespect my work. You can not pay attention to me. You can insult my livelihood. But when you talk about my Anna like that, you cross the line! We haven't seen each other in 5 years, and you have the audacity to criticize my life?!"

I stand there in disbelief. Chrom... what is happening to you?!

"Oh, and my life is nothing compared to yours? At least my employees are happy, and look forward to work every day! And I have someone who loves me, whom I pay unconditional love and attention to everyday!"

"And when is the last time you told mom you loved her? Or took her on a date? Oh, how about the last time you made time out of you BUSY schedule to spend time with your kids?!"

"Don't you give me that "That's not how I raised you" crap! You didn't raise me! You just left mom to take care of us, while all you did was work!"

"You were putting food on the table? Yeah, that's what you always say. I hope you know that you have made enough to feed us, and a hundred families for life! You were just feeding your own ambitions. You cared noting for us."

I just want to hug him...

"You know what? No. No, I won't hear this from you. I'm not going to let you criticize my life and work, and listen to you insult my girlfriend. You don't know anything about my life. You don't know how happy Anna has made me. Sometimes I don't understand how you managed to make someone as kind and warm as mom, to love someone like you!"

"I'LL UNDERSTAND HOW STRESSED AND HOW MUCH YOU HAVE TO WORK WHEN I HAVE KIDS OF MY OWN?!?!?! At least I'll have some decency to pay attention to my kids, and tell my wife I love her on a daily basis!"

I begin to shake. No... no... this can't be happening to him! His father did all of that stuff?!

"Just-Just shut up! I don't care about what you have to say anymore! This conversation is over, and I don't want to have it ever again!" I hear Chrom slam something down.

Oh gods...

I take a deep breath, and slowly open the door. "Chrom...? Are you ok?" I ask.

Chrom breaths heavily, and turns to me. He clenches his fists, and pulls me to him. He breaths raggedy into my shoulder "I won't let you go. I won't ever let you go!" He declares.

I stare off for a moment, and hug him back "I know... I know you won't... I won't leave you... I promise..." I whisper.

He hugs me tight "I love you... I love you so much!"

"I love you too..."

He begins to cry "I won't let anything separate us... not as long as I'm still breathing!" He declares.

All I do is stand there, and hold him tight. "And nothing will... nothing will happen... it's ok..." I murmur.

He hugs me so tight that I can't breath "I won't let anything or anyone take you away from me... never in a million years!"

Can we get some angst up in here?! Yeah, I had always wondered what Chrom's dad would be like, and this is my interpretation! I hope you guys enjoyed reading this, and I hope you look forward to reading more!
