Libran John Lennon embodied many of the contradictions of this sign. He is also a good example of what happens when the scales are in a state of flux.
Lennon was a spokesperson for his generation; witty, liberal, with an irreverent twist, he articulated the feelings of young people in the 1960s and early 1970s in a very Libran way - Heart through mind, emotion intellectualized.
When he was murdered in 1980, his death signified for many people the end of an era. Conservative politics had come to hold sway in England and the US; drugs and excess had turned peace and love into disco and punk. Lennon's death marked the end of the optimism that had characterized the baby-boomer generation.
Throughout his career, Lennon made many comments on life and the state of the universe. One notable comment was given in a 1966 interview with friend and journalist Maureen Cleave, where he stated in relation to the Beatles: 'Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. I needn't argue that; I'm right and I will be proved right. We're more popular than Jesus now.'
This quote made headlines, and in typically Libran fashion, Lennon immediately tried to restore the balance by defending his remarks, saying he was merely musing on his perceptions of the Biele-belt South with a friend. For his braggadocio and witty banter, John Lennon just dearly wanted to be loved.
Lennon met Yoko Ono, a person whom he considered balanced him and made him whole. Their relationship was characterized by their equanimity and their romantic idealism of living and working together, 24 hours a day. As with most Librans, the loved one became Lennon's life's work.
After the Beatles broke up, the 1970s were not a great period for Lennon. He spent the first half of the decade fighting the US Immigration Department for his green card and drinking heavily. Sadly, Lennon was an unusually violent man in his personal life. His emphasis on universal love and peace was driven not only by his overwhelming need to balance the scales, but also to intellectualize his personal problems on a world scale.
He spent the second half of the seventies in seclusion. He and Yoko separated, reunited in 1980 and produced a new album together, release that November.
On the evening of 8 December 1980, Lennon was hailed by Mark David Chapman, a fan to whom he'd given an autograph earlier that day. Chapman shot him five times with a .38 revolver. Lennon was rushed to hospital but pronounced dead on arrival from a massive loss of blood. Chapman clamed it was Lennon's remarks on Jesus in 1966 that drove him to his act.
