Austin was rushing out the double doors in the back of the school. He had 5 minutes to get to the foreign language building that was 6 minutes away when running.
"Woah, speedy," Austin heard from behind him. Again, the familiar sound of Nia stopped him in his tracts. Austin turned around to face her. Nia wore a black v-neck shirt that exposed her in a way Austin couldn't help but notice. Her pink hair was pulled back in a messy pony tail, her legs hugged by skinny jeans. "Where are you going?" she asked leaning against a pole and clutching her books to her chest.
"French," Austin said motioning to the direction of the foreign language building. "I don't suppose you'r being compliant today and actually going to class."
Nia laughed, "Of course not, now that I'v got you." Nia lifted her body off the pole and walked over to Austin. "I don't suppose you'r being entertaining enough to hang out with me." Nia said with a smile and slyly walked pass Austin to the student parking lot.
"French was never really my thing," Austin explained as he fallowed Nia to her car. Austin trailed behind her until he caught up with Nia at her car. She opened the door and slid into the seat. Austin opened his door and tossed his books into the back seat. He sat down and turned to Nia as she started up the car. "What trouble are we getting into today?" Austin asked.
Nia twisted in her seat to look over the back while she reversed the car, "fireworks," she said.
After completing her three point turn she drove off the school property and said, " They are left over from the prank," Nia smiled as she thought of the prank she and Jordan and pulled off. "You like music?" Nia asked awkwardly, up until now the two of them had never hung out alone. It was always the four broken one, Nia, Isaac, Austin and Jordan, never in smaller packs then that as far as Nia knew.
"I love music," Austin said as he watched Nia loud a blank disk into the disk drive of her car. With one hand on the steering wheel Nia played with the buttons until the sound of stinkfist by tool filled the car. "This is my favorite song!" Austin exclaimed as he turned the volume up.
"Mine too!"
"My band did a cover of this song once," said Austin.
"Oh, a rock star," Nia said doing a shimmy with her shoulders and looking Austin up and down. "What do you do in the band?" Nia asked in a slightly flirty voice.
"Im the lead singer," Austin said thinking that in contrast to bass, the instrument he plays, singing was slightly more impressive.
Nia cringed her face, "eww. Singers are cocky," Nia stated.
Austin was slightly offended but wouldn't let that stop him. "I also play bass."
That statement lightened up Nia's face. "Bass player," Nia said as if she was trying the words out to see if she liked them. Nia smiled and turned to Austin as she parked the car in the parking lot of a empty field. "Now a bass player I can get with."
Nia opened the car door and pulled a giant box of fire works from the trunk of her car. Austin got out the car and watched as Nia ran off into the grass and arranged the fireworks into a row. Austin had always loved the way Nia moved, they way her body bounced with every step, or how her arms would swing at her side in perfect harmony with Austin hearts.
Nia pulled a lighter from her pocket and lit the fuse she ran back to Austin and sat in the grass with him. "Whats your band name?" Nia asked throwing her head back and watching the colors fill up the sky.
"Quick fix," Austin said slowly sliding his hand over to Nia's. "How come you know so much about me?"
"What do you mean?" Nia asked in confusion turning her head to Austin.
"I mean I tell you everything about my self, I don't even know your last name."
"Brooks," Nia said. "What are other fact about me, umm, oh I'm naturally a ginger." Nia smiled at Austin. "My favorite color is purple, I hate the word moist, and I really like you. I have a habit of keeping distance from people, that's probably the reason why Jordan is my only friend. My brother won't even talk to me, he says it's because of my manic bitchitos."
"Manic bitchitos?" Austin questioned.
Nia laughed, "hold on." Nia stood up and ran to go light the next fire work when she got back she laid down again next to Austin. "I have bipolar disorder."
"Wow," Austin said as he considered the situation. The sky was still filling up with bright colors. "Whats it like?"
"Well its kinda like I only ever feel two things. Either I'm really happy or really sad; no in between."
"Well I mean we all have our bad days," Austin said with out thinking.
"But your bad days don't need a dose or a doctor," Nia said with an attitude.
"I'm just saying your not the only one with problems, Nia," Austin said defensively turning on his side to look at Nia beautifully angered face.
"Ha, what problems could the rich white boy have?" Nia asked not looking at Austin and not hiding her annoyance. "What did mommy refuse to buy you the new car," Nia mocked.
"What do you mean rich white boy?"
"Please, I've seen your house, you have everything yet you want to try to relate with me."
"I do not have everything!"
Nia laughed. That was the first fight she and Austin ever had and that was the first time they ever connected.
"Ya know what Nia, how about we both control our Manic bitchitos and just try to enjoy the fireworks."
Nia turned to Austin and gave him her death look. With an attitude Nia got up and walked slowly away from Austin. "Where are you going?" Austin called after Nia. Nia gave Austin no response, she just continued to walk away. In the far distance Austin could see her bend down and light all the fire works at once. Nia turned around and walked back to Austin, this time a little faster.
When Nia reached Austin she laid down next to him and rested her head on his chest. Austin took this as a good time to wrap his arm around her shoulders. Nia looked up at Austin her brown eye's reflecting the fireworks that were in the air. " I would love to just enjoy the fireworks with you." Then Nia turned her head to look up at the sky. She and Austin let the time fade away with Nia wrapped in his arms and the fireworks lighting up the sky.
