Chapter One
Paige had always known that Jenni was a fangirl. Everytime they were together, all her best friend would do would be gush about her favourite books and movies, about how hot such and such was or how she couldn't believe so and so weren't dating. Paige didn't understand her half the time, nodding along and smiling at the correct times for the sake of keeping her happy. Paige wasn't a fangirl. Sure, she read books and watched t.v shows, but she didn't have the ability to get so attached to the characters or the plot. She just . . . well, she just thought that they were either good or bad.
Jenni had a little group of fangirls, a band of crazies who freaked the hell out of Paige. They'd scream and squeal about Mortal musical instruments or Games of Hunger and every time Paige didn't understand, they'd call her a peasant or a mundane or something? Jenni always claimed that it was clever but Paige didn't understand. Weren't all human beings mundane? And she was well enough off, she wasn't a peasant!
Paige had always thought that there was a limit. Sure, there was the screaming, the crying, the vomiting, the over-exaggerated exclamations of imminent heart attacks or death, that was fine, but it was as far as it would go. Never, ever, did she think it would go this far.
It started off the week before Jenni went on a holiday to America for the Winter half term. Paige wasn't sure which state she was going to-the one beginning with K was it?-and was quite excited to have a break from the squealing and screaming that seemed to always follow in her best friend's wake. The peace and quiet would be nice.
She could vaguely remember her friend gushing about some guy from the Game of Hungry People movie. He had been her newest obsession or something, added to the top of the pile of various other guys Jenni adored who were famous who she could never have. Every time these celebrities got a girlfriend-or in one guy's case boyfriend-it was Paige's job to comfort Jenni. Which was a lot more tedious than it sounded.
So, this Game of Hungry People actor had recently got a girlfriend. Called Claire or Caty or Claud, honestly, Paige hadn't been listening too hard when Jenni had came crying to her about it. This had resulted in a sleepover that left Paige's house scattered in Ben and Jerry's ice cream tubs. Eventually, Jenni had gotten over it and had moved on. It had surprised Paige how fast she had gotten over it. Normally, it would take a month, tops. Not that she was complaining, Paige was thankful for the quickie recovery. She believed the trip to America was supposed to be to help Jenni recover as well, since she had always wanted to go there ever since she was in Lelli Kellies.
It was when Jenni was in the state beginning with K that the news had came out. It was a BIG thing, it went worldwide immediately, every BBC station alerting watchers that there was breaking news on the main channel. Paige had been watching Indiana Jones on BBC Three at the time and had been reluctant to turn over but her mother insisted, in case something phenomenal happened that they just had to know about or they'd be out of the social loop like world peace finally occurring or poverty no longer being in existence.
It wasn't any of these.
It was a kidnapping story.
What annoyed Paige the most was the fact that this was considered breaking news just because it was a celebrity that had been kidnapped. If a normal person-or mundane, as Jenni called them, they weren't 'divergent' like her or whatever-had been kidnapped, it would have been on the six o'clock news like every other normal people story. But noooo, since it was a celebrity that had been nabbed, it was breaking news! Heaven forbid if the story had been told with the peasant stories.
Paige was startled when she recognized the guy. It was the Game of Hungry People person! The guy dating Claire or Caty or Claud! Jenni's guy. The guy who was the reason for the Baked Alaska tub avalanche in her room! The reporter explained that Josh-oh, his name was Josh, okay, now she could call him something-Hutcherson had been kidnapped from his home in Kentucky the previous night.
