Eli's POV

"So... What is your name?" I sat in between Eve and Adalynn as my step-mother eyed me carefully. I panicked, my mind going blank.

I struggled for words and finally came up with an idea. "... Eliana."

Her gaze narrowed. "I see. And, how old are you?"

"Seventeen."

"Will you be turning eighteen anytime soon?" I thought for a moment. My step-family had never celebrated my birthday, and it came and went like every other day. After a while, I just forgot. I counted the days in my head before answering.

"Tomorrow, actually. So, I'll be eighteen at midnight." She nodded, staring off for a moment.

"Well, my girls," She gestured towards Eve and Adalynn. "Are already eighteen. They're hoping to find their mates here."

I attempted a small smile. "Yes, everyone is always looking for their 'special one.'"

My step-mother continued. "In fact, they're here in hopes of being the next Luna. Isn't that what you're here for?"

I shook my head. "Oh no... I could never be Luna." My step-mother seemed pleased with this. One less competitor.

The food was served around Nine-forty five, and everyone ate quickly. The girls didn't have any meat, only eating salads at their mother's urging. I nibbled a small piece of chicken, turning away from the table. I had never had a complete meal since my family was alive, and could no longer stomach too much food, or the rich sauces and seasonings they used.

The plates were cleared and soon everyone was back in the ballroom, eagerly anticipating the Alpha's appearance. I glanced at the clock. Ten-Fifty. Time had come and gone as I sat in my little corner, watching the crowds. I sighed. Though it was not an eventful night, being able to sit and fit in for once was enjoyable.

Finally, when eleven came, all the people standing to the side moved to the center of the room to see what would happen. The doors at the top of the stairs opened, the announcer stepping out. "Today we are here to celebrate the eighteenth birthday of the Alpha's son, Cyrus Hunter." A loud applause rolled through the crowd. "Now then, please welcome the Alpha and Luna for a special announcement." Another round of applause went through the crowd as the Alpha and Luna stepped out.

The Luna held a microphone in her hand as she spoke. "Today is not only a celebration of my son's birthday, but a hope that he will find his mate. We welcome you all here with eager arms with the chance that one of you will be the future Luna."

Many of the girls squealed, and the Luna stepped back. She handed the mic to the Alpha. "Now, we don't want anyone to get hurt, so please try not to run at Cyrus when he steps out. Keep the order or you will be forced to leave." His voice was gentle, but gave off a warning tone.

Everyone held their breath as Cyrus stepped out. Many girls gasped. He was dressed in a white suit, a blue sash hanging off his right shoulder. His black hair was fixed up, but several strands fell out of alignment, resting on his forehead. His brown eyes glittered with excitement behind his silver mask, but his face was impassive. He carefully made his way into the crowds as his father spoke. "Let the dancing commence!" Music played off to the side, and many girls were already lining up to dance with Cyrus.

I almost laughed when I saw Eve practically drape herself on his arm, only to get shoved off by Adalynn. Cyrus looked annoyed, glancing at his parents for help. The Alpha shook his head while the Luna chuckled. I smiled slightly, turning away from the scene. I continued laughing until an outstretched hand brought me back. I glanced up, my eyes widening. Cyrus smiled at me. "Care to dance?"
