Another Chance

Chapter 1: In the hospital

Rick's POV
It whet so fast. One minute she was on the podium giving her speech for our Captain's funeral and the next minute she's on the floor, with a bullet in her chest, fighting for her life.

Kate was underneath me. She was trying to breath normally, but no matter how she did it, she couldn't. I was staring down at her. Her hazel eyes was staring back too.

"Kate, stay with me, please." I kept on begging her to stay. I noticed that she gave a little nod. A single tear escaped her left eye and ran down the side of her face.

I realized she was going to go unconscious. So I took the chance I know I will never have again. I took a deep breath. "Kate, I love you. I love you, Kate." She closed her eyes.

Hours later, I was sitting in the waiting room, waiting for any news about Kate. In the waiting room with me was: Alexis-my daughter, My mother, Lanie, Jim-Kate's father, Kevin Ryan and Javier Esposito.

I heard the doors open and close. I then heard the voice I didn't want to hear. Josh. "Its your fault. Its all your fault. Your the reason why she is in that room, fighting for her life. If you never have forced her to look at her mother's murder, she wouldn't be in that room." Josh yelled. I did deserve it. It is my fault. All my fault. But he doesn't know why though. I did it because I love her. I love Kate. I would do anything for her. But Josh won't know anything about love. He is never there for Kate. He's always busy with work. He cares more about his stupid career than his own girlfriend. He sounds more like Meredith. Its always about work, work and work. Not family, family and family.

Eventually, I had enough of this stupid man. I got up from my chair. "I don't care what you think of me. You were never there for Kate. Whereas I was. I have been by her side for 3 years! You weren't! She wanted to find justice for her mother's murder. I tried to stop her, but she was that determine to do it. So I helped her. I only did it to protect her, not to put her in harm's way. Now shut up and do your dam job." I yelled! I was so annoyed at this man. How dare he blame this on me. Its not like I shot her. I won't even do that.

Josh finally left. And everyone was looking at me like I got into a fight or something. I probably would have though. I just sat down in the chair that was closest to me and put my head in my hands.

I felt a hand on my shoulder. I looked up and I saw Alexis. "You love her, don't you dad?" Alexis asked me, it sounded more like a statement, than a question. I nodded my head 'yes'. Alexis hugged me. I hugged her back. "I know you love her ,dad, we can see it in your eyes." Jim walked up to me. "You know that Katie loves you too. She is always talking about you. She doesn't talk to me about Josh, she talks to me about you and only you. I can see it in her eyes that she has feelings for you. But Katie is a very stubborn child and she always has been. But when she is ready, she will tell you how she feels about you. But you might have to wait for her." Jim explained. I was shocked. Kate loves me? "I will wait for her. No matter how long she takes, I will wait for her. I will give her time. Not too much, but I will." Jim smiled at me and I smiled back. He went to sit down again in his chair.

No ones POV
An hour later, a tallish man in scrubs walked through the double doors. "Family of Katherine Beckett? He asked. Rick and everyone that knows Kate stood up. The man looked at us. " are you all her family?" None of us said anything, until Ryan spoke up. "No us-" he pointed to himself, Lanie, Javi, Rick, Alexis and Martha. " -are her friends and he-" he pointed to Jim. " is her father." The man in scrubs nodded. "Hi I'm Dr Brown and Miss Beckett's surgery was successful. We removed the bullet from her chest, but she did lose a bit of blood. But we restored it with more blood. She is currently resting and she won't wake up for a few hours." Dr Brown explained. "So she is okay?" Alexis asked. "Yes she is. Kate should be completely fine." Alexis nodded. "Can we see her, doctor?" Jim asked the tallish doctor. "Yes, but I think it's best if only 2 of you go in at a time. Her room is not that big either."

The group finally agreed on that Jim and Rick go in first. Lanie, Ryan and Espo went back to the station to find the son of bitch who did this to Kate. Martha and Alexis went home to rest.

Dr Brown showed the room where Kate was to Jim and Rick. After many twists and turns they finally arrived. It was room 107.

Jim went in first, followed by Rick. When Rick saw the sight of Kate in the hospital bed, his heart crushed. Kate looked so fragile and small in the bed. She was connected to different machines. There was a machine for food, oxygen, heart rate and others he didn't quite know.

Jim stood near the bed and holded Kate's hand. "Oh Katie, don't ruin your life. You still have a life to live. If I was you, I would put your mother's murder behind and focus on the present and future. I can't lose you too, Baby. We all need you. Everyone that knows you, needs you. But I'm so glad your okay. Please don't do that again. I was worried. I love you baby. I have a case to get to, so I'm going to let Rick talk to you now. See you Katie." Jim kissed his daughter's hand and then her forehead. And then he was out the door

Rick's POV
I was just left standing. I slowing started to walk to the bed. I grabbed Kate's hand, carefully. "Oh Kate. Don't leave. We need you. I need you. Your dad needs you. Alexis needs you. The station needs you. See. We need you. If you can hear me, Kate, make some kind of movement. I-i love you Kate. I have always loved you. Since I first met you, I loved you. When we were in LA and we were talking in my room and I said that 'you were the mystery I was never going to solve', I was right. I am still amazed that you are beautiful. You have always been beautiful, Kate. You may not know that or see that, but you are. I am willing to love you forever. I will give you the time you need for you to realize that I'm here for you and that I love you." I lend down to place a kiss on Kate's forehead.

I was just watching Kate, when I heard a sniffle of a nose. I turned around to notice a nurse by the door. "Wow. I have never seen or heard anything so...... Powerful before. Im guessing that you love her then." The Nurse, who was called Dora, stated. I nodded. "Yeah, I do love her. I love her more than anything in the world. I will do anything for her." Dora nods. "I heard that she has a boyfriend that works here." I was shocked. "Um... Yeah. Josh Davidson." "Um... I'm going to tell you something that might shock you." I was confused. What could possibly be worst than the woman of my dreams, the love of my life, getting shot. "A few minutes ago, I saw Josh with another nurse. I thought that they were just chatting about something. But then I saw Josh kiss the nurse and they kinda had a little make out session." My jaw was open. It felt like it was hitting the floor. "OMG!!!! I knew it!!! I knew it!" The nurse was confused. "I knew he didn't love her." Thr nurse nodded in agreement. "Josh never talks about his girlfriend's to anyone." "How did you know that Kate's boyfriend was Josh?" I asked. "We didn't. We only found out when Kate whet into surgery and Josh saw her and mentioned her name and another surgeon asked him if he knew her. And that's when Josh told us that she was his girlfriend. How long were they both together for?" The nurse asked. "About an year." The nurse nodded. She finished checking Kate and was out the door. I was alone again.

He suddenly felt tired, so he closed his eyes and was alseep in no time.
