Galloping on her horse, Kali felt perfect, the crisp breeze on her face, the pretty white clouds hanging in the sky, the sun beating down on her, Kali felt that it was the best day of her life. She was going to start a new life in a new town, far off from her own homeland. She was going to grow crops and raise livestock. Her great-aunt, Mia, had told her the town was going to be perfect. Kali turned around to face her twin brother, Kai, riding behind her on his brown horse. “Hey, Kai.” she said.
“Yeah?” Kai replied.
“Can you believe it? We’re not even adults yet, and we’re going to be starting a new life in a new town…” Kali smiled wondrously. “I wonder what will be awaiting us…”
Kai kicked his horse to make it go faster. He caught up with Kali. “I know,” Kai said, also with wonder on his face. “Who would have dreamed that our parents would have-” Kai stopped to see the angry look on his sister’s face. “Okay, Kali, I’m really sorry, it just burst out…” Kai said slowly.
Kali kicked her horse, and she was ahead of Kai.
“Kali…” Kai called. “I’m sorry!”
Kai also kicked his horse, but this time he didn’t catch up with her. She was already in the next area. Kai sighed and kicked his horse to see his sister on the ground, eyes closed, face tight with shock. “KALI!” he screamed, and ran up, before he found himself also on the ground.
“Are you okay?” someone said.
“Hmm… huh?” Kali opened her eyes. In front of her were two people, an elderly - looking, handsome man and a young, beautiful woman. “Wha-” then suddenly she remembered. “KAI!” she yelled. “Where’s Kai?”
The people had confused looks on their face. “Kai?” They exchanged looks of realization, then looked back at her sadly. “The young man around 19? The one with brown hair and brown eyes?”asked the woman kindly.
Kali nodded furiously.
“I-I’m very sorry, dear.” the man whispered. Then everything went black, and she found herself later in a hospital. Another woman with short black hair and a boy around her age with brown hair was looking at her intently. She stared at the boy. He looked so much like Kai… His eyes just about tore her heart apart… They resembled Kai so much… Kai was dead… he was dead! Sobs escaped Kali’s throat… she did not even have time to say goodbye. The last thing she ever was to him was not what she intended to do…
“Erm, hi!” the boy suddenly said out loud. “I - I’m Hiro.” he said, blushing profusely. The woman smiled. “I’m Doctor Ayame. Are you alright?”
Kali spoke in a strained voice. “C-Can I see Kai?”
Doctor Ayame nodded, still smiling. Did that mean… was he alive?
Weakly, she got up out of her bed where sheets had been so tightly tucked in just for her.
She followed Doctor Ayame to the next bed.
Hiro spoke. “Kai hurt his head… He has severe Dicolypisitimus Pergamiaus.”
Kali didn’t know what to say to that.
“In other words,” Dr. Ayame said, “He hurt his brain and is in a deep and very long sleep, also called a coma.”
Kali stood there, frozen.
Solemnly, Hiro said, “He will be sleeping for a long time. When he wakes up, however, he will be perfectly fine.”
Kali continued to stand there.
“But,” Hiro said, “cures are going to take centuries to find!”
“No, no, no…” Kali whispered, clutching her face in her hand. Dr. Ayame, oblivious, motioned for Kali and Hiro to follow her. Dr. Ayame took them upstairs. “Now, Kali.” she said. “If you really want to heal him, which you obviously want to, you must find all of the Wonderfuls.”
“Wonderfuls?” Kali asked. “What are those?”
“Well, the name says it all…” Dr. Ayame said mysteriously. “If you can collect all of them, the Harvest Goddess’s daughter, the Wonderful Goddess, will grant you one wish. You must wish to heal your brother.”
Kali’s eyes grew wide. “Where can I get these?” she asked.
“There are seven of them,” replied Dr. Ayame. The Wonderful Goddess will put them in your Rucksack if you work hard… very hard, that is. She will only be able to give you 4 wonderfuls. You’ll have to find the rest. You can find them in the mountain. However, the Wonderful Goddess can only grant you one wish in your whole lifetime. You could wish for love…” she cast a swift look at Hiro, and then at Kali. “You could wish for money, anything at all. Only one wish, though…”
Dr. Ayame got up. “Well, it’s time for you to go home. Hiro, would you take Kali to her new home?”
Hiro nodded.
“Tomorrow, show Kali around town.” she instructed.
“Yes, Doctor Ayame,” Hiro said, much like a drone. Kali got up out of bed, and followed Hiro outside.
“What- what a wonderful day!” he stammered. “Um, so, um… let’s go to your house.”
He took a right, and then went up and then again, taking a right.
“This is your land.” he said, finally managing to talk normally. “ This is where you should plant your crops, and you put your animals here,”
“So, uh, this is your house,” he said, pointing to a little cabin; it was adorable!
Without thinking, Kali flung her arms over Hiro, and just for one second, one whole second, she thought that he was Kai… that they were going to live a happy life in the new town...
