It Came Upon the Midnight Clear

It came upon the midnight dark,
That devilish song of blood
From devils bending near the earth,
To touch their pitchforks red:
"War on the earth, and pain to all
From evil acts of badness done"
The world in fearful stillness lay
To hear the devils sing

Still through the darkened skies they come,
With evil wings unfurled;
And still their devilish music floats
O'er all the deathly world:
Above its sad and lowly plains
They kill with merciless knives
And over the dark and scary sea
The evil devils sing.

O ye beneath life's crushing load,
Whose forms are bending low,
Who toil along the climbing way
With painful steps and slow;
Look now, for pain and deadly hours
Come swiftly on the wing;
Oh die beside the weary road
And hear the devils sing.

For death, the days are hastening on,
By prophets seen of old,
When with the ever-circling years
Shall come the time foretold,
When the bad evils and devils shall own
The Devil of Death, their King,
And the whole world will get killed soon
And now the devils sing
