Unlock my heart

Take the key and keep it

Just promise me please

Your love will now complete it

The next day, in 1rst period, Derek sits on the other side of the room, next to Lydia. I hate to admit I'm a little disappointed. I guess I was really getting used to his company. When the bell rings, Derek walks out with the popular crowd. Stop being sad, I tell myself, this is how you like to be. Alone.

All day, Derek completely ignores me. I caught him looking at me once, but he quickly looked away. A permanent frown is etched on my face as I sit at my usual lunch table in the corner. God, why is his absence affecting me so much?

Someone walks up from behind and sits down in the chair next to me. I look up to see the usual charming Derek smirking at me.

"Shouldn't you be over there?" I point to the popular table.

"Nope," he says simply.

"Okay..."

I continue eating. You could almost feel the tension between us until Derek breaks the silence.

"So, hows your day been?"

I snort. "I think the real question here is how your day been."

He shrugs. "Just fine, thank you."

We resume eating in completely awkward silence. He suddenly gets up and goes to throw out his garbage. He doesn't come back. I turn around to see him chatting away with the populars. Figures. I get up and throw out my lunch. I need to go somewhere and think.

I head to the library. I have the perfect hiding place, in the back behind some shelves. I go there anytime I need peace and quiet. I settle into one of the chairs. Am I jealous that Derek is ditching me for the populars? No, I can't be. I mean, he does have an amazing smile... and don't even get me started on those gorgeous eyes. He's so nice and funny and- no. He doesn't deserve to put up with all my crap. I'm not going to drag him under with me. By the time the bell rings, I have a plan that will benefit both me and Derek.

I start to walk to class.

"Hey! Kate! Wait up!"

I quicken my pace and slide into the girls bathroom. I breath a sigh of relief.

"Kate? Are you in here?"

I stumble into a stall and crouch on the seat.

"Kate? I know you're in here... Look we need to talk. Can you please come out before a girl walks-"

I hear a high-pitched shriek and a string of curse words. I put a hand over my mouth to muffle the laughter. The girl rushes out of the bathroom and I tentatively step out of the stall.

"Well, hello there," he says with a smirk.

I roll my eyes and ask," So, what do you want?"

He bites his lip. "Right, well, can we meet up after school? I really need to talk to you but we gotta get to class."

I nod my head.

"Okay, good," he says and walks out.

I follow him out, slightly confused. By the time I reach the hallway, he's already returned to Lydia and all her friends. Of course. I duck my head and walk to class.

When the last bell rings, Derek meets me in the doorway and pulls me away.

"Can we make this fast? I need to catch my bus."

He thinks for a minute. "You're coming over my house."

I scoff. "And why would I do that?"

"Because you missed your bus."

I look out the window, and sure enough, my bus is gone.

"Crap," I mumble and follow him out the door.

"So, how are we getting to your place?" I ask.

He holds up keys.

"I have a car."

I let him lead me out of the school and into an expensive car.

"Nice ride," I remark. He smirks.

He pulls of the parking lot and onto the road.

"So... what did you want to talk about?" I ask casually.

"We'll talk at my house."

I groan and lean back in the seat. He chuckles and pats me on the leg gently.

"Be patient."

We pull into the driveway and walk into the house.

"Welcome to my humble abode," he says, smirking.

His "humble abode" is actually mansion. I stare at it in awe.

"Are your parents home?"

"No."

He leads me into his huge room. I sit awkwardly on the edge of his bed.

"So..." I say.

He sits next to me on the bed, a little too close for my liking, but I don't move. I'm the first to speak.

"Aren't you going to say something? I mean you brought me all the way here and-"

"Shhh..." he whispers, putting a finger to my lips.

He stares intently into my eyes, and I into his. We sit like this for a couple minutes. All of a sudden, our gazes are broken as he crashes his lips to mine passionately. I forget my dad, I forgot my loneliness, I forget everything, as I kiss him back feverishly. He finally breaks the kiss and we gasp for air.

"Wow," I whisper.

He looks at me, breathing heavy, eyes full of lust. He looks away.

"You should go."

"Wha-what?" I stutter, confused.

He gets up.

"Come on, I'll drive you."

It seems all plans to "talk" are forgotten as we leave his house and get in his car. As we drive towards my house, Derek stares straight ahead, his face showing no emotion. I stare at him angrily. I mean seriously, who kisses someone so passionately and then kicks them out of their house? I knew I shouldnt have went with him. I knew I shouldn't have trusted him. This is why I shut everyone out.

He drops me off without saying a word and I practically run up to my room. I flop onto my bed and start to sob. I haven't cried like this since... since my dad died. In fact, I havent cried at all. Why is this upsetting me so much? Maybe I care about him... but I shouldnt. Especially not now. Especially not after what he just did.
