never meant to be

when I thought of you,
i forced my heart to beat faster,
forced those feelings I thought weren't supposed to come easily,
made up my own version of 'love'.

we confused affection with a friendship,
happiness with contentment,
stability with a car crash,
we confused love with chaos.

i called us drifters one night,
you told me that I was cynical,
that we would work whatever we had out,
but how can you solve something that doesn't exist?

fate didn't push us together,
it was society telling us that love needed to define us,
some invisible pressure that sat on our chests,
squeezing any love out of our weak hearts.

so let's cut our losses,
and stop trying to fake this thing we have,
something so obscure and unrecognisable to love,
we were never meant to be.

So this poem was inspired by the song I've put with this chapter and I kind of imagine this poem to be the other person's response to the lyrics of the song. The way the other person in the relationship would react. I guess there is some element of reality in this poem, but I won't get into that too deeply.

Is it weird that I almost enjoy explaining these poems as much as I enjoy writing them? I really love writing these poems, and even though they aren't masterpieces, I hope that I'll improve over time.
