Dominique

"Aren't you excited for your first day of college!" Natasha yelled with a huge smile.

"Yeah," I chuckled weakly. We approached the dorm we were assigned to & Natasha practically burst through the room.

We were known for that. Natasha is the loud, confident party starter & I'm the quiet sidekick who reads. A lot.

"Alright, two beds. Which means it's just us," she smiled.

"Great. No more social anxiety," I exhaled in relief & sat on top of my bed. I pulled out the classic copy of "To Kill A Mockingbird" & dived straight into it.

"Um Dom we gotta unpack," she threw a pillow at me.

"Now?" I groaned.

"Yes now. We don't wanna be late for the freshman follies," she bubbled. I looked at her with a confused look.

"Didn't you read the social activities in the brochure?" she asked with a gasp. I shook my head.

I stayed well away from any social activities since middle school. I'm surprised Natasha even wanted to be friends with me so bad. I was not socially awkward. Just socially anxious. I'd always wonder what people thought about me & get upset if I wasn't invited to anything. So I decided to withdraw myself from human life forms completely & stick to the world of literature instead. That's the degree I'm aiming for right now. One in literature so I can become a novelist. Not an author. But specifically a novelist.

Natasha struggled for something in her back pocket & pulled it out.

"Freshman follies. A mixer for all freshmen from all dorms to meet, socialise & indulge in the culture of Maryland University," she explained & pointed to the pictures.

Those pictures from brochures are always posed. None of them are actually having fun.

"Nope. Not my cup of cappuccino," I shook my head & kept reading.

"Dom please," she wailed. I ignored her by putting my book closer to my face. She took it from me & put it under her arm.

"Please Dom. Just this. After this no more," she sulked.

"Promise?" I asked with my eyebrows raised.

"Promise," she smiled.

"& if broken?" I asked.

"I'll go & hunt down for the original copy of "This Side Of Paradise" & buy it for you," she smiled.

"Okay," I smiled & she started squealing,

"But," I continued.

"But?" she looked at me.

"I have to be gone by 9pm sharp," I uttered.

"Why?" she asked.

"I have to go to the lecture at 6am," I tried to focus. Every time I lie, I squint.

"Oh bummer. Well at least you're coming!" she smiled & started unpacking.

"Yeah. At least," I dropped my box on my bed & started unpacking with her.
