Mary Santiago| 16
"You're Mary, right?" A boy with rounded eyewear approaches me with an intimidating face. I nod in confirmation and he hands me a box, I look down on it with soft eyes. He leaves my presence without another word.
I slip the gift under my arm and pick at the tape as I head to integrated math II, a sophomore class.
"Mary!" Nadia, a friend of mine, calls me over to sit with her as soon as I step foot into the hectic classroom. "Oooh, who's this from?" Nadia takes the box into her hands, observing it carefully.
I shrug, words unable to escape past my sore throat. "Can we open it?" Again, another shoulder shrug. She tears the box open, reading a written note aloud to me. "My sweater doesn't fit anymore, so you can have it." She pulls out a blue sweater, giving it to me. "Put it on."
I simply give a quiet decline and Nadia gets up and forces it over my aching head. "Cute." Nadia coos in satisfaction. "It reeks of cologne." I cough out, taking a whiff of one of the sleeves.
"It's from a boy!" Nadia squeals to me, clinging onto both my arms. "woo." I sarcastically cheer, the only thought running through my mind was 'can this day go by any faster?'
"Mary come on, lighten up, it's your birthday." Nadia attempts to lighten the darkened mood.
"Nadia. shut the hell up." I roll my eyes, grieving a bit. "Aw, look at you, using big girl words." Her figure leaving up onto me, I instantly snap on her.
"Guess what? I can fight like a fucking big girl too." I sass, shoving her off. She lays off, switching seats with a random boy neither of us know.
How mature of her. Our teacher passes back our finals, congratulating the students that passed and giving free lectures to the ones that did terribly.
A group of four barges into the class, papers and wrapped gifts in hand. "Good morning, Mr.Roberts. We have a quick announcement, may we present?" The girl from the group asks.
He allows and they come over to me, stacking the wrapped boxes beside my desk. The girl counted to three with the three boys and they begin belting out the Happy Birthday song.
"-happy birthday, dear Mary, happy birthday to youu." The entire class stares at me and I freeze, looking like a lost child. This is so embarrassing.
"Happy birthday, Mary." The same guy from not too long ago, says.
