Lucy Montgomery-13
As I walked through my brand-new living room to meet my brand-new family, I stopped and looked into a mirror I had never seen before. Long wavy black hair, big brown eyes with thick long eyelashes, and the rest of me staring back. This was the 5th family(and hopefully the last) I'd have to meet this month. All because my own family didn't want me anymore. All because my own family decided to give me away. All because something went wrong with the injection.
They say I still have IT. They say that the injection failed, which it never does. What is IT? Nobody really knows, except the people in the LABS.
There is a specific test you are required to take once you turn 15. The people who get the highest scores get jobs in the military and government. The people with the lowest scores are used as Lab Rats. Those people are forced to help with the research of IT, most of the time just getting injections of IT and just living it out. Nobody knows about the test except the people who took it, and the people who took it are sworn to silence. The punishment of breaking even the smallest of rules in the New World is becoming a Rat or worse, being banished outside the city limits.
I took a deep breath and walked into the bedroom with my new family inside it. They were blonde with blue eyes and very pale skin. That was odd. There were barely any blonds in the New World after the war against Europe. Almost everyone was dark skinned with dark hair and eyes, like me.
"Hello?" I asked tentatively.
There was a mom, a dad, two twin boys, and a girl barely over the age of 12. The boys looked disgusted, as if I'd just came in, kicked off my shoes, and got myself comfortable between their parents. The little girl looked exited to meet someone new. The parents faces were so angered and full of fury. That wasn't good. I felt a lump in my throat. What did I do? Why did they seem upset? What had I done?
"The mud." The mother said as if this should be any kind of indication.
"You tracked mud onto the carpet," the father said. "Martha! Clean this mess or your not getting your pay! Do you hear me? Now!"As he looked back on me, which I wasn't sure if I wanted him to, after how he treated 'Martha', who may be the maid.
"Now. What did you say your name was?" He spoke very loudly, as if he couldn't hear even himself.
"L-Lucy. Lucy Montgomery," I stammered, unable to keep my cool.
"Now, dear first thing we change, that horrible last name," the mother tutted. "You will be a Nelson," she said these words with a very heavy Swedish accent. Nelson, I thought. Where had I heard that before?...©©©©©©©©©©
Do you think this family will be Lucy's last? Or will she have to go through another awkward meeting with new people again?
