Sitting up, I grabbed a tissue off the coffee table in front of me and blew my nose violently. With a huge sniffle and a grunt, I fell back down into my lying position on the couch.
"Mackenzie, I made you some chicken soup and put it in the thermos and left it on the counter. Alright, honey?"
I propped myself up on my elbows, glancing up at my boyfriend standing behind the couch and nodded.
Coughing, I replied, "Yeah, thanks. I have to leave soon to head to school for the carnival. I know I volunteered, but if I had known my cold was going to get this bad I would've canceled."
His face fell. "Cancel? Why would you cancel? These teenagers these days always make commitments and cancel last minute. That's what's wrong with the world today. Especially canceling something as important as volunteering! If you don't go, then the school will find some poor homeless person to do your job and they'll advantage his kindness by significantly underpaying him. You flakey teenagers these days don't underst-"
"Tobias," I said, cutting him off. "I hope you realize you and I are both seventeen. You yourself are one of the nowadays teenagers you're lecturing me about."
He scoffed. "I am not lecturing you, Mackenzie. I'm just trying to make you aware of the issues with our youth. Anyway, I have to leave for the church's choir practice. Make sure you drink the soup I made you."
"Wait," I said as he began heading to the door. "Where's my kiss?"
Tobias whipped his head around to look at me so quickly that I was amazed he didn't get whiplash. "You're sick and you want me to kiss you?"
"That is what people do in normal, loving relationships."
He sighed. "Did you forget that I have my audition to become lead tenor in the school choir in two days? You know how much that means to me, Mackenzie. Making me kiss you would be selfish because I'll catch your cold and ruin my chances."
I fell back down on the couch with an eye roll. "You're right. How inconsiderate of me. Have a good choir practice, Tobias."
I heard my front door open. "Make sure you text me when you're leaving, when you get to the carnival, when you're leaving the carnival, and when you get home. Also, remember to drink the soup I made you before it gets cold."
"Thanks, Mom, I got it!" I called out sarcastically.
He chuckled softly. "Good night, Mackenzie. I care for you."
"I care for you too, Tobias."
At the same moment the door shut, I rolled over on my side and shut my eyes. Hopefully, I could get a quick nap in before I had to leave for the carnival at 7:30. I was technically supposed to be there already to help set up the booth I was working, but obviously, that didn't happen.
