Chapter 1 - Katie

Kathy often gets on my nerves I quote:
"Horse back riding is SO much harder than dance"
"Dance? Who does that"
"Dance is for girls who have nothing better to do"
We always rely on mom and dad to resolve our problems. They're the glue to this family. I love them with all my heart, honestly. Especially because if it weren't for them, I wouldn't be able to do dance! I swear, my life revolves around them.
Then there is Kathy. The little brat that ruins everything. She even brags about being 1 MINUTE, yes 1 minute older than me. Ugh. If only she didn't have problems breathing, I would've been the first one to arrive. What doesn't help is that she gets a period off school to help out at the dumb horse farm! Why can't I do that for dance? Oh, I know, DANCE IS ONLY AFTER SCHOOL!!!! Kathy always is one step ahead of me and I hate it!
Ok, now to my friends. I'm not very popular, but I'm ok. I have 3 friends, Julia, Scarlet and Jose.
Julia is my first friend. We've known each other since we were 2 years old. She comes to dance with me.
Scarlet, she was the new kid 2 years ago and Julia, Jose and I welcomed her and we've been friends ever since.
Jose is a boy. He goes to dance with Julia and I. I met him in grade 3. He was really annoying. He was from Australia and his accent bothered us. That night at our dance class, to Julia and my horror he walked in the door. We avoided him as much as we could only to find out, a couple days later, how similar we all are. Then in grade 5, I was sick. I has bronchitis. Jose came every day after school to make sure I was ok. It was very kind. But once I recovered everyone kept asking if I was dating him. I said no, and to this day I still say no. We get teased about that a lot. It's kind of aggravating.
Anyways, I am not the type to get into boy talk, but I guess I just got carried away.
Currently, we are on our way, mom dad and I, to pick up Kathy from the ranch, and to take me to dance. As we pull up into the parking spot mom phone rings. "Oh, sorry Katie , I have to take this, and your father has to pay, so may you please go let Kathy know we're here?" I huff, because it's raining outside and it's going to wreck my hair I need for dance.
I step out the car. I walk with dad over to Maria. She is the cashier and is excellent with horses. She is also very kind. "Kathy is out on trail 5." She says to me. I nod and walk over to trail 5. Of course, the forest. Full of mud because of the rain.
I am only in flats because they are easy on and off shoes which is good for dance.
I slowly tip toe through the forest avoiding the mud as much as possible. I'm mostly looking at the ground to watch where I'm stepping, and when I look up I see Kathy on a horse.
"Kathy!" I shout. " We have to go!" Kathy looks back at me and smirks. "Where are we going? You're dance?" She makes a clicking noise with her tongue and the horse starts to run, or gallop or whatever. The mud it's kicking up is all over me
"Ack!" I shout looking down at my leotard. I hear Kathy scream. It's as if it was happening in slow motion. She fell off the horse and the horse stepped/stopped on her leg. It kept running. I can't erase her screams from my mind. I'm frozen on the spot.
