The Dragon's Den

One and a half years later...

Alacrity was in a cave he hadn't wandered in before. Under one of the hills in Yosemite, he found a cave that in his mind was large enough to fit a dragon. He hadn't dared to venture into this cave yet, but the opening seemed to be calling him. So he packed a torch, and stepped into the cave.
The fire on his torch was fluctuating as there wasn't enough oxygen in the cave. The floor was hard dirt, compacted to make a path, and sharp stones hung from the roof. The light cast shadows on the walls, making this adventure more unnerving than it should be. The dragon was dead, what else could be in here? The necklace around his neck, a tooth and two scales hung on it, swayed against his chest as he continued through the cave that seemed more like a tunnel.
He rounded the last corner, and the tunnel opened up into a large open space, nine meters in diameter, at least. He briefly looked around the cave, and found nothing of interest.
Except for, tucked away in a corner, he found two eggs. Eggs that reached halfway up his thigh. When he wrapped his arms around it, his fingers could barely touch each other. These eggs were not ordinary. Not in the least.
The dragon was going to be a mother.
        To two little dragonlets.
He wondered if they could still hatch.
Then he wondered if he wanted them to.
But they would only be little dragons. Didn't they deserve a chance to live?
With indecision, he turned around to leave the cave, pondering whether or not to bring those eggs into the sunlight. As he stepped out, the light from the sun blinded him for a second and then he walked by the river that was flowing smoothly, on the grass that was green and under the trees that had thousands of leaves. The grass swayed in the gentle breeze, and the trees rustled. Then he came in sight of his home, and found Micah waiting on the porch steps.
A shadow passed overhead, and he knew without looking that it belonged to his hawk. It passed over the grass, and vanished into the trees.
Micah stood up upon seeing him and yelled, "Mr Alacrity!" and waved his brown hand with newfound energy. The man smiled.
