Even though I was already home with dad, I still need to go out to get food for supper.
I walk out of the house and into town. The sun is setting and Kubo is finishing up his story.
Once I get to a shop, he is packing up to leave.
I take a little while, because there is a line. Once I finish, the shop closes and the town is empty.
I walk through the square to get home. But as I walk, I see a little red pouch. I go over to it, and it has a little beetle symbol on it.
Kubo must have forgot it. I pick it up, and it is slightly heavy. It must be filled with something important.
I put it over my shoulder, and I go over to the exit to the town.
I'll return it, and come home straight after.
I walk over the bridge, and through the field. Then I start to make my climb up the mountain.
After a while of walking, I am pretty tired, and it has been dark for a while.
I look into the cave on the top, to see Kubo and his grandfather asleep.
But something is wrong.
Colorful paper is flying everywhere, making a strong wind inside the cave. I look at Kubo and he is stirring in his sleep. Is this a nightmare?
The paper sort-of takes form. The colorful paper forms a monkey and a beetle. They are shouting at Kubo but nothing seems to be coming out.
More paper forms a house, and the orange paper makes it look like it's on fire. Then two shadows made as black paper fly away quickly and disappear.
All of this happens while the monkey and beetle are still shouting. This is happening in his dream.
But then the monkey and beetle see me.
The monkey hurries over to me, and looks as if she is saying the same thing she was telling Kubo.
The monkey points out of the cave and points at Kubo. At the beetle and monkey are pointing at Kubo with a frightened atmosphere around them, they disappear, and the scraps of paper fall to the ground.
I walk over to Kubo and shake him awake.
"Kubo! Kubo! Wake up!" I say as I shake him.
He groans and then sits up quickly.
"Mom?! Dad?!" Kubo says.
Oh yeah. I almost forgot that the monkey and beetle are his parents.
Kubo's robe is off, and he has no shirt on. I can see his body, and my cheeks start to heat up at the sight. I shake it off.
"Kubo, do you know at all what happened?" I ask.
"Not really. I saw my parents, and then I saw a faded version of someone's house. There was orange, and then I saw some black things flying by. But I'm not sure." Kubo says.
I help Kubo up.
"I saw them too. The paper in your bag was making all those shapes. They saw me too, and tried talking to me."
"Really?!" Kubo says surprised.
"My view of the event was clearer though. Someone's house was on fire, and two shadows came out after it."
"If they talked to you, then they must have been warning us about something. And it wasn't really a dream."
"I don't know what they were saying though, they were silent but were trying to shout. All I heard was the rustling of paper."
Kubo sits against the wall near his grandfather taking this all in, and trying to process this.
"Well, we should be aware, because when it happens we can try to help." Kubo says.
"But it didn't look like they were finished. They disappeared as they were talking." I tell him.
"We can figure it out as we go. But out of curiosity, why exactly were you here?" Kubo asks.
"U-um, you left your bag in town, and I was just going to return it to y-you." I say embarrassed at the situation.
I hand him the bag.
"Oh, thank you." Kubo says with a smile.
"Well, I should probably get going." I say. I get up and leave the cave.
Just as I turn the corner, I see smoke rising up in the sky.
I run back to get Kubo.
"Kubo! There's smoke!" I shout to him.
Kubo's eyes grow wide, and he quickly gets on his robe. He gets his things and we both run to town.
We quickly get down the mountain and I trip on a rock in the field. Kubo grabs my hand and brings me up.
He doesn't let me go as we run, and I get a little nervous.
As we get to town, I get scared. The smoke is coming from a familiar area.
Once we get to the house, I get out of Kubo's grip and run inside as fast as possible.
I need to get dad out of there.
