Steven was sweet, and his intentions were genuine, but Lapis Lazuli could hardly stand the sight of the ocean. Or any water, really.
She sighed and leaned against the boat railing, fishing rod in hand as she waited for a nibble. She had been waiting for a while, and had almost given up when there was a sudden jerk at the line. Steven, who had been about to fall asleep beside her, bounced up and grinned. "You got a bite! Reel it in!"
She followed Steven's instructions, pulling as hard as she could but to no avail. She was almost pulled overboard as another tug jerked the line, but Steven ran to help her, grabbing her and pulling her inwards.
"It must be a big one!" Steven exclaimed.
There was a large form rising through the water and Lapis gasped and released her grip on the fishing rod.Jasper.
Memories of being chained to the ocean floor emerged. The fear of losing control; the anger of being so close to Jasper; the crippling sorrow of her situation.
As Malachite they were stronger. Better.
They were right... But so wrong. It hurt Lapis to keep herself prisoner, but there was no other way. She had to keep Jasper under control, or risk losing Steven, her only friend in so long. Jasper had to be stopped, and if that meant she had to sacrifice herself as well, Lapis Lazuli would do it in a heartbeat.
"-apis? Lapis, are you okay?" She blinked as Steven distracted her from her thoughts.
"I'm fine Steven."
Tremors shook the boat suddenly and Greg, Steven's dad, came from the wheel.
"There's something wrong with the engine. It's making noises and just suddenly went out." He explained.
Steven frowned as Lapis sighed. "I'm sorry our boating trip didn't go as planned."
Greg went to try to fix the engine, and Steven tried to cheer Lapis up. Lapis couldn't shake the feeling of dread that was creeping up on her though. There was suddenly a noise from the front of the boat, and as Lapis looked towards it she went wide eyed.
Climbing onto their small, rented boat was the last gem Lapis wanted to see. She backed away as the intruder grinned and began to move forward.
"Jasper."
