When my eyes opened they met the peaceful face of my sleeping husband in our warm bed. It was one of the very few days that we both had off, so we were sleeping in. Of course that meant we were still both on call for the FD and if for some reason the ambulance needs assistance.

It was almost 10:00 when I finished my daily run and stepped into a warm shower were I was soon joined by my husband. Together we enjoyed the warm water against our skin before getting dressed in casual clothes.

Some days getting dressed in anything but a black shirt with black pants and a black belt with black steal toed boots felt weird. It was almost as if I forget how to match my clothes when I go weeks at a time wearing only tacticle gear.

By the time I was showered and dressed it was 11:00 and I was hungry. I went down stairs and gathered the tools I needed to prepare breakfast. I opened a protein shake and used it to take my medications before I oiled the pan. In the other pan I put a small amount of butter and let it melt before laying down long strips of bacon. I copped potatoes and onions into small chunks and threw them into the oiled pan before adding some dill seasoning.

When I had a plate pull of bacon and the potatoes where nearly finished I put down four pieces of toast and drained most of the bacon grease into an old coffee can. Using the last bit of bacon grease left in the pan, I cracked six eggs and added a very small amount of milk. I began scrambling the eggs right when my husband came into the room with a small box.

"What's that?" I asked though I knew it was probably a gift.

"I've been wanting to give this to you for a while now and was just waiting for the right time. With everything we've been through these last few months, I wanted you to be able to wear something that would make you think of me on hard calls" He was forever so sweet and caring. I couldn't believe this man was actually mine.

I slowly took the box after removing the now done scrambled eggs from heat. I opened it and smiled when I saw the heavy duty 5.11 tacticle watch with gold accents. "Flip it over" I did and to my surprise he had had it engraved.

"Oh babe! It's perfect.. thank you!" He knew that I had recently lost my watch and was in need of a replacement. So thoughtful.

We said our I love yous and sat down to eat. As I poured us juice and coffee he got up and stirred the fireplace, adding more wood. The food was perfect and after cleaning up and washing dishes I put on my new watch, setting it for 13:00.

Some days were normal civilian days, without calls and heartache. There were enough good days to outweigh the bad. And one of the most important things to remeber when facing the bad days is that someone loves you a great deal.. like my husband loves me.
