Chase and I laughed and grinned as we walked down the hallway. We were surrounded by our classmates, everyone talking at the top of their voices. My return and Chase being made captain of the soccer team was a great way to kick off senior year.
We sat down in homeroom and I was catching up with my old friends and filling them on whatever they wanted to know about California. I grinned as the guys disappeared but they were only replaced with three girls.
"Hi Ryder," they chorused.
"Lisa, Rose, Stephanie." I flashed them a megawatt smile in greeting. What can I say? I'm pretty popular with the ladies. They giggled as we made small chat but I could tell by the way they pulled down their tops and leaned towards me, they wanted to do more than talk.
"Alright, everyone to their seats." I looked up to see an almost elderly woman strut into class as the bell rang. I leaned back into my seat as everyone scrambled about. Chase tapped my shoulder as he sat next to me and gestured to the girls and I showed him the three newest contacts on my phone.
"No phones!" the Homeroom teacher barked. I quickly shoved it into my pocket.
"Sorry," I smiled warmly at her. Chase chuckled when I got no reaction. I glared at him before my eyes scanned the classroom, noticing the empty seat by the window at the front of the class. I wonder who's it could be? The guy in front passed a student data sheet to me, snapping me out of my thoughts.
"Please say "Here!" when I call your name," the teacher said. I groaned inwardly as she started taking attendance as slow as a snail. I frowned as she hesitated and her eyes darted to the empty seat before calling another name.
"Okay class, I'm going to go through the school rules." Cue groans from us. "The next person to make a sound will get a detention. I don't care if you are seniors, in my opinion, this is the year you need it."
I spaced out as she droned on. Everything was going great so far but I had a nagging feeling that something was missing. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a figure behind the frost glass window on the door
"...and anyone who reaches after half past eight is late," the teacher turned to face the door. "I hope you remember that Ms Swanson."
My heart raced as the door opened and a slim girl slipped inside. My eyes widened as she took off her cap.
Mira-Jean
She had bloomed over the years, her hair hung wild from her ponytail and tumbled to the small of her back. She wore a shirt that was a size too big for her over a white tank top. Her eyes glinted dangerously just like the numerous piercings lining the rim of her left ear. Her jeans were ripped but something told me it wasn't for the sake of style and her knuckles were slightly bruised.
"First tardy of the new year Ms Swanson," the teacher said, signing the tardy pass Mira-Jean handed wordlessly over. "If you get two more it's detention for you, but from what I've heard about where you live," she sneered as she handed Mira a data sheet, "giving you detention is a favour."
I looked at the teacher in shock as Mira-Jean walked over to the only empty seat in the class and sat down. I opened my mouth to tell the teacher that her remark was totally uncalled for when I felt a hand on my shoulder.
