Deepest Shade of Jaded
Chapter Three
That was eleven years ago. Eleven years since my parents abandoned me at a park. It’s taken those eleven years to piece together the events of that day, and even then, I never remembered my last name or my parents’ names. Candy’s been more than kind to me. I have everything I could ever want. Well, almost everything. I often wonder what became of Devin, if he searched for me at all, or if he gave up. I wouldn’t blame him if he did. I wouldn’t be surprised if he forgot about me completely. Sighing I turned up the volume on my iPod, and sang along to my favorite band, Motionless in White. My boyfriend Alex showed them to me and I fell in love. Their lyrics were so beautiful and had so much meaning. They were the ones who gave me enough courage to pursue my dream in music. Because of their music I could now play the piano, the flute, bass, electric, and acoustic guitar; the drums, and I could do both clean and unclean vocals. I can speak fluently in three languages besides English. I had five years each of Spanish, French, and German. I also know a bit of Japanese from all of my TV shows and listening to music. I play basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, football, and I’m Captain of the Cheer Squad at Watermount High. I take dance, and am a competitive gymnast. I love animals, especially goats and donkeys, though I couldn’t tell you what made me start loving them. I have a bunch of cameras and I’m always taking pictures and writing about the things I see. It can be as simple as a leaf falling from a tree. If it’s there, chances are I have a story about it. I guess it’s my way of proving to me that I’m worth it, and that my parents messed up when they abandoned me. As you can imagine I’m hardly ever home, and when I am I’m outside. It’s a busy life, but it’s my life, and I love it. I rolled out of bed and got a shower, knowing I had to be at school early if I was going to be able to study for my Chemistry test. I loved being a junior, because I had so many opportunities. Singing the lyrics to Smile by Avril Lavigne, I showered and got out. I went to my closet wondering what I should wear today. I smiled, picking out a purple tank top, high waisted black shorts, grey high tops, and a bunch of jewelry. I debated about keeping my hair straight and leaving the red and white mass alone. But then I shook my head and turned on my curling iron. I turned on my Black Veil Brides playlist, and hummed along to Rebel Love Song as I put on my makeup. Doing a smoky eye look with silver purple and black, with winged eyeliner and a touch of mascara and lipgloss, I decided I liked how it looked and curled my hair quickly, letting the ringlets fall down my back. Grabbing my black studded bag, I ran down the stairs. Candy was sliding pancakes onto the plates of the three elementary students she fostered. She laughed and spoke without even looking up, “He’s in the car. Good luck on your Chemistry test today. Remember to look over section three; you were having a bit of trouble with that. I’ll see you when you get back tonight.” I smiled gratefully and hugged her before making sure I had my phone and iPod with me, then running out to get in the passenger side of the car Candy had bought for the high school students. I looked over and grinned at him, kissing him on the cheek. He smiled and grabbed my hand, pulling out of the drive and onto the road. The ride to school was normal. I spent the majority of it staring at Alex and wondering when he would realize I’m not perfect and dump me for someone else. He just continued driving with an amused look on his face, as if he could read my thoughts. People told me we were the perfect couple, I always assumed they meant he was perfect and I was lucky to have him. I was snapped out of my thoughts as we pulled up to the school and parked. Climbing out of the car, I was immediately bombarded with voices. People asking me to tutor them, or help them in various sports, or what makeup I used. I smiled; I guess I am kind of a celebrity. I held on to Alex tightly, trying to answer everyone nicely. “Hey everyone, Jade has a huge test today and she needs to study, but remember she has her last hour free and is normally out here at the oak tree if you need her.” Alex always thought my popularity was funny, because I was what he called “the good witch of the North.” There was also a wicked witch of the West as well. I knew her and had worked closely with her in a few things. I even tutored her last year when she was having trouble in maths. But at the end of the day it always came down to one thing, I had Alex, and Delia wanted him. She despised the fact that he didn’t want anything to do with her and she blamed it on me. I didn’t point out that it was because she was rude, and put everyone else down. Speaking of Delia, she walked up to me with her two closest followers flanking her. “Do you need something Delia?” I asked kindly. No matter how rude she was I wasn’t going to stoop to her level. She looked nervous. “Um, actually I was wondering if you could help me with the test today, since I know you always study the morning of the test.” I nodded and motioned for her to follow me to the Chemistry room. Since I was always tutoring other students, I had access to almost everything the teachers had in the classrooms. I even had keys, should I need to run back and grab something. I was a very trusted student. I unlocked the door and turned on the lights. “Here let’s go back to the large table where we can all sit.” I didn’t remember the names of her friends, but they had the same hour as Delia, Alex, and I. We all sat down, and I got the extra study materials out of a folder in Mr. Rink’s filing cabinet. Sorting through them I asked what everyone needed extra practice on, and gave them the corresponding papers. And that was how I spent my next hour before the bell rang. I went through my classes, taking meticulous notes, and asking questions when I didn’t understand. When I met up with Alex before Chemistry, Delia was already there with Britanny and Shelby tagging along. “We uh, wanted to say thank you for this morning, I’m feeling pretty confident now that I understand all of the concepts.” The girls standing behind her nodded shyly and looked away. I smiled reassuringly, “I’m sure you’ll do great. All of you.” She returned my smile, and we all walked into Chemistry together, earning more than a few looks, as Delia and I were known around school as “ice friends” meaning we were cordial and helped each other out, but we weren’t friends. We all sat in our seats, Alex and I by the windows, the girls on the other side of the room. Mr. Rink passed out the tests and we started. Since I had studied hard this morning, I wasn’t stuck on any questions and handed my test in early, taking a stack of papers off of Mr. Rink’s desk and sitting at the window table, and began grading them. The bell rang for last hour and I handed the now graded stack of papers back to Mr. Rink and walked out with Alex. “How do you think you did?” I asked. “I’m not sure, there were a few that I was unsure about, but I think I passed at least. I’m not even going to ask how you think you did, because we both know you’re going to ace that test just like you ace every test.” I blushed and he laughed and poked my cheek. Smacking his hand away I giggled. As we walked out the doors to the oak tree, he pulled me close and kissed the top of my head, making me look up at him and smile. We sat down and braced ourselves as we were flooded by people who came to talk to me. I answered every question, went over every problem, gave every piece of advice to anyone who asked. I showed one girl how to maximize the speed of her pitch in softball, and recommended a wrap for one girl who played volleyball and hurt her wrists. Whenever I glanced over at Alex, he was watching me with an expression that screamed “This is my girlfriend, and I am so proud of her.” When the final bell rang I bid my fellow students farewell and made my way to the locker rooms to change into my cheer uniform. After that I walked quickly over to the football field where we held cheer practice. I had come up with a new routine that I wanted to try out with the girls, but I wanted to go over it with Delia first. She was my second in command, and if I was ever sick or running late from a tutoring session, she took over as Captain. When I reached the football field, Delia was already there, as were most of the cheerleaders. Practice didn’t technically start for another five minutes, but I went ahead and had the girls start stretches, so I could talk to Delia. I went over the new cheer routine and what I thought we could do with it, and she seemed all for it. This was one front on which we were united. We got the girls ready and went over the new routine and practiced it a few times, working out the kinks and adjusting some pieces. At the end of practice two hours later, we were all sweaty and exhausted. “Go home girls and get a good night’s rest. Remember we have a game tomorrow so we need to be here and warmed up at six tomorrow night. Meaning be here at five thirty so we can warm up! Wash your uniforms tonight and eat a good breakfast tomorrow.” Delia said loudly. “You guys did great today we are so proud of your hard work and all the effort you put into it. That’s it for today, have a great night!” We packed up and headed out. As I walked across the field to the parking lot where Alex was waiting I started to get dizzy. ‘Not again,’ I thought to myself. “Alex!” I shouted, just before I collapsed at the edge of the lot.
