The repercussions of that fateful night stretched far, and none of them were good. Remus refused to talk to Samantha, who in her turn got all teary eyed and sniffly whenever the young werewolf walked into the room. Sirius was also angry at Samantha, more than James even was, and although he talked to her a little it was bitterly. It only took a few days for James to notice the distance Sephy now was forced to put between her and Nashville, and after eventually getting the full story out of his Quidditch Captain, James was now no longer talking to Sephy.
To make matters worse for Halley, too, it seemed that Lily had told Marlene about what she had told her about Colton, and Marlene, being Marlene, had told the whole school. So now Halley wasn't talking to Lily or Marlene, and she felt like she was now violently hated by most of the year above her.

So, the girls banded together, as did the boys, and seven became very quickly four and three, the three becoming more despised by more people as time went on and rumours spread.

The next full moon approached quickly, and Sephy, Halley and Samantha watched from afar as Remus got more and more stressed and dishevelled, as he always did. This saddened them, as this full moon would have been the first time they had all been able to go with Remus down to the Shrieking Shack in their Animagus forms.

"It's a bummer" Sephy sighed, as the three girls strolled, arm in arm, across the bridge away from the castle, a few days before the moon in question. Halley had some Chocolate Frogs to eat, and the three had decided to go and eat them outside, where people couldn't stare or judge them. Samantha had brought some Potions revision, and all three of the girls fully intended to learn something that afternoon.

They came out of the arch at the end of the bridge, and began their walk down the big hill. They were only a little way down when sudden, high pitched, terrified screams came to their ears.

"The hell?" Sephy quipped, looking left and right.

"There!" Samantha pointed. "Down by Hagrid's!"

The three girls looked. They couldn't see very well, but they could make out two tiny figures down by the hut. One was on the floor, covered by a black mass. The other was the one doing the screaming.

"Oh god, no" Halley breathed, dropping everything she was carrying and sprinting off down the hill. Samantha and Sephy were at her heels, leaving all their belongings in a heap halfway down the slope.

As the three reached the hut, Hagrid himself leapt out of it, followed by Fang. He said something-Halley didn't catch what-but she already had her wand out by then and she was concentrating.

Halley's Patronus still wasn't corporeal, but it was getting better and better the more she practiced it. As she successfully drove the shape she thought was a Lethifold back off of the figure on the ground, she thought she could see the four little legs again, but she wasn't sure.

Now the black mass was away from everyone, still hovering at the edge of Halley's Patronus shield, Sephy and Samantha began shooting sparks at it.

"Clear off!" Sephy shouted at it. "Go on! Shoo!"

Halley nudged it back more with her shield, and it seemed to realise its cause was lost, disappearing once more into the forest.

"Tha's impossible" Hagrid murmured, in the silence that followed. Halley looked back at him tiredly.

"I know."

"You know wha' tha' was, Miss Derwent?" Hagrid carried on, as Sephy hurried to the figure on the floor, a young second year Hufflepuff boy, and Samantha to the standing girl, same year, from Ravenclaw.

Halley swallowed.

"I think I do. I also think that it probably doesn't like me very much now."

"We 'ave ter tell Dumbledore" Hagrid decided aloud.
