chapter two; stupid

Wednesday was the second week of the internship at the primary school and so right when Clara woke up from a nice dream, she had a weird feeling in her stomach. She was a bit nervous but not too much. The people were incredibly kind and the kids were amazing, reacting positively when she introduced herself to the class. Everything would turn out fine. She only had to believe it herself.

She got up to change into a pair of clothes and went to do her hair. She brushed her teeth, did her mascara and walked down the stairs.

Her mom was already sitting at the dinner table, eating breakfast. She smiled at her daughter when she sat down in front of her with a slice of bread. "Good morning. Have you slept well?"

"Hi. Yeah, it was alright." She bit her food, chucking down a glass of orange juice. "Only if I could sleep a little longer."

"Oh. I wouldn't mind at all," her mom yawned, taking her warm cup of coffee in her cold hands. "I'm glad I don't have to work too much. I'm done at 7 PM. Would you mind cooking tonight? Sandra is eating at Chris'."

"That's okay."

"We're eating pasta."

"Oh, my favorite!" Clara wanted to giggle happily, but then heard Hayley pulling over on the driveway. She stood up quickly, putting on her shoes and gave her mom a kiss on her cheek, saying her goodbye. "Good luck with work."

She grabbed her jacket and bag before leaving the house, stepping into the familiar black car. Her friend wasn't looking too cheerful, doing her makeup in the view mirror as if she didn't have time to do it at home. "What's up?"

"I forgot to set the alarm," she shrugged, technically throwing her bag in the backseat as she started the engine and drove away, in the direction where she had to be. "Fortunately William woke me up or I would've been late to pick you up. He made breakfast, that cutie."

"Aww, how sweet!"

"I know,"  she laughed, shaking her head unbelievably. It was rare that something like that happened at home and of course she was still confused. Her brother would usually hid her hairbrush, maybe put it in the underwear drawer or he would annoy her until she would burst and run after him. "He has been acting weird lately. Maybe something has happened at school-..."

"He got laid!" Clara interrupted her, yelling as she put her hand in front of her mouth. With the other hand she was pointing at the brunette. "You know in movies that happens; guys are always cheerful after having sex."

"This isn't a movie, 'Lara," Hayley sniggered, stopping in front of the primary school. "I'll find out what happened to him."

"Maybe he's growing up-..."

Sending her a look, she shook her head, "no, that's impossible. We both know that." She watched Clara step out of the car and wave. "Yeah, bye. Good luck with the kids!"

"Thanks!" she closed the door, turning around and sighing deeply. Alright, here we go.

 ----

Right when Clara walked towards their usual table the next day, Hayley threw her hands in the air. She was grinning from ear to ear, nodding her head up and down.  "Guess what, you are so right about William. He had sex with a girl on Saturday night when he went out. They have been texting ever since and he is so in love!"

"No way!" her mouth dropped open in surprise, shaking her head. She opened her bag to grab an apple, biting her teeth into it. "Has he told you that? That is the cutest thing I've ever heard!"

She had known William for years now and to be honest, she'd never thought he'd be so cute and sweet... and normal. She remember him calling her a dwarf because she was so small, finding her weird when she dyed her hair red and teasing her with... well, anything possible. William had grown up, falling in love with a girl he had sex with.

"How was your internship yesterday?"

"Oh my god," Clara giggled cheerfully, thinking back about her day. "I totally forgot that it was painting day and I've put on one of my favorite clothes, but it was amazing anyway. All those kids were finger painting and I had to help them; it was so adorable." She sipped from her water bottle, "how was your day?"

"It was fine," she sighed dramatically, leaning her chin into the palm of her hand. "Only I had to act like I had fun sitting with my classmates. All they we're talking about was homework, food and what they we're going to this weekend," she rolled her eyes in annoyance. "Like I want to know if you're going to go horse riding. I don't want to know if you're planning on watching TV or play video games, I'm totally not interested, alright."

"It looks like there is always someone who likes horses," Clara chuckled stupidly, biting her apple. "I think they're creepy, probably because they're so large."

"You're just small," Hayley simply said, smirking at her. It wasn't like she got offended by that; the girl knew she was small, they was no excuse for that.

"Shut up-..." she defended herself, running her hand through her long hair. When she noticed her friend didn't reply, not even with a nod, she looked up.

The brunette seemed to be taking glances in the direction of Jesse's table.

"What are you doing? Stop looking!"

"No," she wiggled her eyebrows teasingly. "I wanted to know for sure it was you Jesse was looking at you and yes, he was. Why don't you just talk to him? I want you to talk to him, for goodness' sake!"

Hayley had been trying that since the beginning. She wanted her friend to talk to him, get to know each other a little more. If she liked him or anybody else, she had to do something about it but the girl was just too shy... and insecure.

Clara's cheeks turned bright red and she shook her head as she giggled. "No, I'm not talking to him. If he wants to talk to me, he has to come to me. I'm so awkward, I'm not doing that."

"You're stupid."

"No, you're stupid."

"You're the most stupid."

The girl rolled her eyes, sighing while putting her cold hands on her burning cheeks. She didn't want Jesse to see her blushing; it was obvious it was because of him. She bet he even knew she liked him. She hoped not, but there was a high chance. "I don't care. I'm stupid and proud of it."

"Whatever you say."
