CHAPTER 1

Eljin Danford was in a mystical place. A place full of secrets and unravelled powers. It was pitch-black, but with gleaming little lights from above.

"Eljin don't touch that!", a familiar voice called her.

She kept moving forward.

"Eljiiiiiin!!"

Riiiing!

"Did I slept in class?" Eljin wondered rubbing her eyes.

"Still not obvious, Danford?" Alab joked. "We took a long quiz."

"What??"

"Just kidding."

"What's the next subject, by the way?" she asked him.

"Homeroom."

"Ms. Uracia's coming! She's coming!" Charles screamed at the top of his lungs as everyone panicked and sat on their proper seats.

"Good morning, Ms. Uracia!" Everyone greeted and took their seats.

"Good morning, class. Are you ready for our Halloween party?" She asked excitedly. "Are your costumes ready?"

Everyone was now buzzing about it.

"Say 'sure' if you are ready with your costume." Ms. Veinns Uracia grabbed the class list and started to call.

"Keilah?"

"Sure."

"Alab."

"Sure."

""Carlo?"

"Sure." he answered with a frown.

"Eljin?"

". . ."

"Eljin Danford."

"Sure."

The whole class was sure about their costumes but Eljin was not that ready. Ms. Veinns Uracia chatted with her students about the upcoming event and everybody seems to be excited about it. The room was loud and chaotic but, of course, fun, knowing that everyone's excited for the party tomorrow. It was their last period for the day and most likely the last ones are the happiest because you know what comes next.

Riiiing!

Upon hearing this, rooms were quickly left empty. All the pupils, including Eljin Danford, rushed to their homes and some maybe stopped by the computer shop near the school.

The smell of roasted chicken and mushroom soup entered Eljin's nose.

"Sweetie, it's time for dinner!", her mother invited.

Eljin did not took any longer to come down, the food smells good. She can't wait to taste it. As she sat down, she remembered about the party tomorrow.

"Umm..Mom?"

"Yes, dear?" Jean, her mother, replied placing the perfectly roasted chicken on the table.

"We have... a... a... Halloween Party tomorrow."

"That's great!"

"So umm.. would you mind if I...Well.." Eljin looked shy and horrified at the same time, "I--I would like to say that my costume..."

"Oh yes! About that, what are you going to wear, dear?"She arranged a bowl of sweet sauce beside the chicken.

"I'll be a phoenix."

"Wow! Let me see your costume!"

"Tomorrow!"

Jean sat down to eat with her daughter. They paused for a while and prayed.

"What do you mean tomorrow, Eljin?" her mother asked slicing a leg of the chicken on top.

"I was hoping if you could go with me tomorrow to buy the costume." Eljin nervously stated.

The conversation began to fume up but the chicken is still aromatic and flavorful.

"I'm sorry, honey, I still have appointments tomorrow. You can go buy it with your friends, right?"

"But mom, I don't really know where to buy it... so... I need your help."

Jean forked the meat to her mouth.

"Tomorrow." Eljin added.

"Darling, I can't and I don't have even a tiny bit of idea where to find that phoenix costume of yours.", her mother articulated. "And why did you tell me about this just now? Young lady, you've shown irresponsibility."

Eljin sighed softly. She already predicted another long speech from her mother.

"When were you oriented about the party?" she asked.

"Two weeks ago." Eljin uttered.

"Two weeks ago? You see that?! You had a lot of time to tell me about your costume and you ask me where to buy it a night before the event will start? Foolish." She munched some mushroom.

"Please, mom. You don't have to worry about the expenses. I can use my savings, just..just--'

"I already told you many times! If you need something from me, tell me a week before the deadline. I don't want to get stressed."

Eljin haven't touched the food in her plate.

"Please mom! I was.. I don't want to be a phoenix because if I told you earlier you might prepare too much and add some girly touches. Please, mother." Eljin pleaded.

"If you worry about your mother's action, you better not behave like that! I just want you to look beautiful on all occasions."

"Hmmpf! Beautiful. I want my own style. My fashion! Purple. Blue. Black. Not pink, yellow and orange!" Eljin controllably yelled at her mother.

"That's enough, young lady! Go upstairs and sleep!"

Eljin marched heavily and banged her bedroom door.

"And don't you dare do that again when you're angry!" Jean screeched.
