Chapter 1 - A New World

I dumped my bag down on the kitchen bench of my old dodgy apartment. The light flickered as I flicked on the switch. I had just returned from my underpaid job at the local bakery. Ever since my parents died I had to drop out of school and could not afford to go to university. I was smart, the smartest student at my school. I left school in grade 9. The only way I could make money was to work full time at the bakery. I was now 22. The only little joy in my life was Death Note. I remember saving up for months to be able to afford them. I didn't have a TV, internet or a phone so I could only read the manga. I sunk my back into the couch and reached out for my beloved book. I never had support, they told me I would just do fine on my own. A tear ran down my cheek as I thought how much I would like to be in the Death Note universe. Even though the threat of Kira. I would give up everything, for happiness. I drifted off into a sad sleep, the book falling onto the ground. The sound echoed through my body.

I opened my eyes. I was in a spacious modern bedroom. I instantly shot up straight. Everything looked strange, animated. "W-where am I?!" I ran out of the bed and out the door into a massive open plan room. I looked out a window and saw that I was in a city, a busy one. I ran out onto a balcony and gazed over the busting city beneath me. Everything was animated, what was happening, was this a dream, what is happening to me. I brought my hand up to my mouth and bit it hard. I screamed in pain. Blood seeped from the wound. I wasn't dreaming, this was real. Now a bit more settled into my environment I headed into the bathroom and looked at my reflection.

I traced a finger around my cheek. I too was animated but it strangely felt normal. Everything was the same about me, my (H/C) hair, my (E/C) eyes. Everything. I looked down at the bench and saw a note. It was in Japanese, but I could understand it. It read

"For You, my dear (Y/N). Everything will be explained with time. ~ Lawliet"

"What is this, who's Lawliet?" (NOTE: L's real name was never revealed in the Manga). I picked it up and studied the messy Japanese handwriting more, then folded it up and shoved it in my pocket. Who left me the note, I need to find out. More importantly, why could I understand Japanese. I walked back out and into the lounge, there sitting in the corner was a TV. I excitedly ran over and turned it on. I hadn't watched TV in years. It was the news; it was my best chance on finding out where I was. It was all Japanese, local Tokyo news, I was in Tokyo not (Y/C).

"Seven criminals in jail have just recently died of heart attacks. The victims have had no known heart disorders and died within a few seconds of each other." I froze in my spot. I-I was in the universe of Kira. I ran into the bathroom and splashed water on my face, I then looked into the mirror.

"WAKE UP DAMMIT!" I screamed at myself. I continued to splash more water on my face. This had to be real, I wanted it to be. I stood up straight in sudden realisation. I could save L but how was I going to do it.
