Draco tried very hard to gain Harry's friendship. Nothing seemed to work. However, something did make him tick. Bugging Harry Potter endlessly.

Knowing that by raising suspicion by taking the toad boy's remembrall, his name is Neville Longbottom, Harry, being Harry of course, would try to keep him away from Draco.

When, at the first year's first lesson for flying, Neville's broom got out of control, fell and went to the infirmary with a threat hanging in the air from Madam Hooch, Draco decided to make light of the situation and make fun of the boy.

Draco thought that Harry Potter made a big mistake by befriending people that didn't even deserve to talk to him. Harry was just too kind not to befriend them, he made it seem like he had no choice in the decision. That's what Draco thought in the matter, and he was trying to change Harry's mind, no matter what house they were in. Though, really he didn't care about any of the other Gryffindors.

Really, Neville's broom was just helping things.

Draco was purposely challenging Harry because he knew for certain, with his personality in play, that he would accept. Harry knew that Draco had purposely tried to take it during breakfast and that he wouldn't let Draco have it. Plus, Draco was purposely insulting the guy. Harry would definitely have a problem with that.

But when Harry Potter had gotten on his broom after him, Draco didn't actually consider him doing that since Draco was sure that Harry had been informed that Draco Malfoy had been taught Quidditch at a young age and practiced ever since so he wouldn't be stupid enough to try. He was wrong this once.

It absolutely stunned him as to how well he could fly, for since Harry lived with muggles Draco was plenty sure he'd never even touched one. But there he was, on a broom facing Draco as if he had the same exact skills that Draco had, if not more. But Draco Malfoy was not as jealous and/or as stunned as he was impressed and admired. But that didn't mean it didn't stun him.

After Harry threatened to knock Draco off his broom, which Draco wasn't even able to convince himself that he wouldn't really do that, Draco made a last minute decision after Harry made a very clear point that Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle would not be able to help him.

So he threw it. "Catch it if you can, then!"

That one decision determined a lot of what would happen in the future years. (I mean, think about it. Not only did Draco get Harry into Quidditch and become he seeker but remember what may not have happened if he wasn't. How he caught it, what would soon be inside it.) But Draco Malfoy didn't know that.

Draco Malfoy really did underestimate Harry Potter, he knew he had the minute Harry was on that broom. Whether the broom was new or old he still moved it with easiness.

So, to gain back his pride in what he always believed he was the best at, he challenged Harry to a Wizard's duel.

Of course, he also wasn't planning on Harry accepting to something this different to him that he probably had never even heard of. But again, the incident with Harry Potter able to fly on a broom better than him, which made Draco slouch every time he heard these words because they were true. If they weren't, Draco would be in Quidditch too.
